The Top Employers Institute, a globally recognized authority in employer certification, released the “Top Employers China 2020” list. Roche Diagnostics secured the second position and was honored as a “Top Employer China” for the tenth consecutive year. It not only topped the healthcare and medical sector in China but also remained the only company in the industry to receive this distinction for ten straight years.

As one of the global leaders in the field of in vitro diagnostics, Roche Diagnostics is committed to developing and providing diagnostic systems and solutions ranging from early disease detection and prevention to diagnosis and monitoring. Since officially entering China in 2000, Roche Diagnostics has embarked on a journey to provide innovative, precise, and efficient diagnostic technologies to Chinese doctors and patients, while growing together with local talent in medicine and life sciences. With the vigorous development of China’s healthcare industry and the addition of more outstanding local professionals, China has become Roche Diagnostics’ second-largest market globally.

Mr. Yao Guoliang, General Manager of Roche Diagnostics China

For ten consecutive years on the list, Mr. Yao Guoliang, General Manager of Roche Diagnostics China, stated: “China is one of the key markets where Roche continues to invest, and talent along with an excellent human resources management strategy are the cornerstones of the company’s sustainable development. Roche Diagnostics has always been committed to innovative practices, fostering an agile organizational culture and a people-oriented corporate ethos, continuously attracting more outstanding talents, enabling every employee to realize their self-worth at Roche Diagnostics, truly achieving a shared destiny between employees and the enterprise.”

Agile Culture Drives Business Success

In the rapidly evolving VUCA era (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity), market challenges are intensifying day by day. Only through more agile and flexible human resource management and operational approaches can we empower employees with greater autonomy. Roche Diagnostics is committed to cultivating a growth mindset among its employees, helping teams enhance their ability to adapt to ever-changing new business models, thereby driving business success.

Roche Diagnostics believes that agile organizations possess an optimal balance of three key functions: speed, stability, and flexibility. In 2019, Roche Diagnostics China officially established a cross-functional “Agility Squad” to disseminate concepts and share best practices within the organization through various initiatives. This effort aimed to create a fully empowered work environment and foster an agile organizational culture, thereby maximizing team and individual motivation to rapidly respond to external environmental changes and customer needs.

While driving innovative practices, Roche Diagnostics continues to deepen the development of an agile culture. As a long-standing cornerstone of employee management practices, “Check-Ins”—which encourage employees and managers to break down hierarchical barriers and engage in spontaneous discussions anytime, anywhere—have taken root at Roche Diagnostics. This approach has subtly strengthened employees’ sense of ownership and fostered a growth mindset. Meanwhile, short-term job rotation programs tailored to employees’ career development continue to be implemented, not only enhancing cross-departmental collaboration but also providing broader platforms and more diverse options for individual professional growth.

Innovation and Human-Centricity in Equal Measure

Roche Diagnostics consistently upholds a people-centric corporate culture, exploring the impact of new digital technologies on human resources management (HRM) and nimbly responding to the transformative changes these innovations bring to talent development and growth. In 2019, Roche Diagnostics advanced its HR digital transformation further by building upon existing initiatives and prioritizing employee experience to fully integrate digital technologies into HR practices. Ms. Zhang Hongxia, HR Director of Roche Diagnostics China, stated, “Roche Diagnostics not only applies emerging technologies to in vitro diagnostic products but also leverages innovative achievements to optimize HR management models. This approach comprehensively enhances employees’ mindsets, knowledge, skills, and execution capabilities, thereby improving employee experience while streamlining HR processes, creating a win-win scenario for both employees and the company.”

As the official external-facing window for Human Resources, the Roche Diagnostics Recruitment WeChat Official Account underwent a comprehensive upgrade in 2019 to cultivate a younger and more personified employer brand image. In addition to optimizing the resume submission channel, it further integrated more Roche Diagnostics employer branding information, the “YOUNG Program” internship initiative, and the prestigious Roche Diagnostics Education and Research Fund. Furthermore, by introducing an “AI Interviewer” that leverages multi-dimensional evaluation criteria provided by Roche Diagnostics, the system intelligently matches candidates, thereby enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of talent identification.

In terms of enhancing employee experience and training development, the traditional HR Open Day has evolved into an Employee Experience Day. This initiative fosters cross-departmental collaboration and leverages games and high-tech tools such as VR/AR to more efficiently disseminate HR-related information and promptly address employees’ pressing concerns. Furthermore, AI is utilized to analyze employees’ learning needs and assess their core competencies. Through big data analytics, training courses are intelligently recommended based on employees’ actual developmental needs, thereby improving learning effectiveness. Employees can also scan specially designed AR markers via the Roche Diagnostics internal app to access diverse content related to employee development, training, and benefits, enabling them to stay informed about company updates in real time and formulate their personal development plans.

A New Beginning: Building the Best Place to Work

From office hardware infrastructure to corporate culture, Roche Diagnostics remains committed to cultivating an optimal workplace characterized by “agility, efficiency, and a people-centric approach.” It provides every employee with opportunities for continuous learning, professional excellence, and the pursuit of their aspirations, thereby attracting the most suitable and top-tier talents to join Roche. In the future, initiatives such as Micro-Courses, the Online Library, Roche China University, and the “i-Benefits: Fulfilling Roche Program” will be further deepened to offer employees more diversified support in learning, development, and welfare. This aims to achieve an optimal work-life balance while continuously enhancing workplace competitiveness.

Mr. Yao Guoliang, General Manager of Roche Diagnostics China, stated, “Being recognized as a Top Employer in China for the tenth consecutive year is both an affirmation and a new starting point for Roche Diagnostics, urging us to continue increasing our investment in human resources innovation and practices. Employees are Roche Diagnostics’ most valuable asset and the key to the company’s core competitiveness. In the future, Roche Diagnostics will continue to invest in building its employer brand, and we hope that more talented individuals will come to know Roche, join Roche, and stay with Roche. Only by having a strong talent pool can the company truly fulfill its long-term commitment to the Chinese market—continuously advancing medical standards and enabling more people to access high-quality healthcare services.”
