Fortune magazine recently released its list of the Best Places to Work in the U.S. Biopharma Industry for 2020, with Roche’s Genentech, Novo Nordisk, and AbbVie ranking in the top three.

Other biopharmaceutical companies on the list include Horizon Therapeutics, United Therapeutics, Acorda Therapeutics, Exact Sciences, Harmony Biosciences, Accent Therapeutics, and Boston Pharmaceuticals.

According to Fortune, 85% of the evaluation is based on a survey completed anonymously by employees about their experiences at the company, along with further analysis of the survey responses adjusted for company size and employee demographics (relative to industry peers). Some of the questions in the survey include:

A Genentech employee stated, “Genentech is an inclusive and diverse place that allows me to fully dedicate myself to my work and realize my true value. No matter how new I am to the organization, I receive applause in public settings and am given opportunities for growth at every step.”

Interestingly, the three large biopharmaceutical companies at the top of the rankings performed slightly worse in terms of employee feedback than the remaining seven smaller biopharmaceutical companies. In surveys conducted at Genentech, AbbVie, and Novo Nordisk, the proportion of employees who considered their company a great place to work ranged from 85% to 89%, whereas this figure exceeded 90% for the other, smaller-scale biopharmaceutical companies.

Among them, Accent Therapeutics is dedicated to translating the science of RNA-modifying proteins into innovative cancer therapies. With a workforce of only about 20 employees, the company achieved a 100% overall employee satisfaction rate. When employees were asked five separate questions regarding management engagement, approachability, competence, and organizational vision, Accent Therapeutics led in every category, scoring 100% across the board.

In summary, the survey questionnaire comprises over 60 questions, including those related to employee benefits. Genentech, AbbVie, and Novo Nordisk performed exceptionally well on metrics such as whether employees proudly tell others about their employer and the company’s contributions to the community.

In addition to the questionnaire, this ranking is also based on external assessments of innovation, corporate values, and the efficiency of company leadership.

Fortune pointed out that this ranking was determined before the COVID-19 pandemic. The response to the crisis may tip the scales in favor of large biopharmaceutical companies, as these larger firms have more resources at their disposal to support society and employees, whether through medications or financial assistance.

For example, Genentech recently initiated a clinical trial of the arthritis drug Actemra (tocilizumab) to evaluate whether the medication can control the dangerous inflammatory response associated with COVID-19 infection. The company has also provided 10,000 vials of Actemra to the U.S. National Stockpile for future use.

AbbVie is collaborating with health authorities, including the World Health Organization (WHO), to conduct clinical trials on its HIV combination drug Kaletra/Aluvia as a potential treatment for COVID-19. Like several other U.S. pharmaceutical companies, including Merck & Co., Eli Lilly, and Pfizer, AbbVie has also implemented policies allowing its employees to contribute their expertise through volunteer work during the crisis while continuing to receive full pay.

Meanwhile, Novo Nordisk is committed to helping those financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic by providing a 90-day free supply of insulin to eligible patients under its enhanced diabetes patient assistance program.
