On the afternoon of June 7, according to sources familiar with the matter, AstraZeneca is in talks with Gilead Sciences regarding a potential merger. If successful, the deal would be the largest healthcare transaction in history, valued at $96 billion.

If successful, the merger would surpass both the $74 billion Bristol-Myers Squibb–Celgene merger in 2019 and the $63 billion AbbVie–Allergan merger.

It is understood that AstraZeneca contacted Gilead Sciences last month to explore potential collaboration. Insiders added that although Gilead has discussed the idea with financial advisors, no decision has been made yet, and the two companies have not engaged in formal negotiations.
