Suzhou Hongsen Pharmaceutical's $1B Asthma Drug Salbutamol Sulfate Inhalation Solution Approved

On July 14, Suzhou Homesun Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.’s Class 4 generic drug, Salbutamol Sulfate Solution for Inhalation, was approved for marketing by the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA), deemed as having passed the consistency evaluation.

Salbutamol sulfate is a selective β2-receptor blocker, clinically indicated for acute asthma attacks, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and bronchospasm. The originator company, GSK, achieved sales of £938 million (equivalent to $1.178 billion) in 2019.

The products developed by GSK in China mainly include Salbutamol Sulfate Solution for Inhalation and Salbutamol Sulfate Inhalation Aerosol. In February 2020, the generic drug of Salbutamol Sulfate Solution for Inhalation developed by Hebei Renheyikang Pharmaceutical Co., LTD was approved first, deemed as having passed the consistency evaluation. The domestic manufacturers of Salbutamol Sulfate Inhalation Aerosol include Lunan Pharmaceutical, Shanghai Sine Pharmaceutical Laboratories Co.,LTD, Jewim Pharmaceutical(Shandong)Co.,Ltd, and YANGZHOU NO.3 PHARMACITICAL MANUFACTURE CO., LTD. No manufacturer has yet passed the consistency evaluation.
