The New CGM Track Is Here

Abbott's Dual-Indicator Sensor Approved

Recently, Abbott announced itsLibre Duo and Libre Duo 10-Day Dual-Analyte Continuous Glucose and Ketone Monitoring Systems Receive EU CE Mark, this is the world's first biosensing wearable device capable of simultaneously and continuously monitoring glucose and ketone bodies in a single sensor.

Over the past few years, the global CGM industry has experienced rapid growth. According to QYResearch, the global CGM market size was approximately USD 10.03 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 25.73 billion by 2032, representing a CAGR of 14.6% from 2026 to 2032.

However, at the same time,Parameters"Involution" has also begun to encroach upon this lucrative sector. In recent years, international CGM giants such as Abbott and Dexcom, alongside domestic manufacturers like Yuwell and Sinocare, have been engaged in a competitive race to optimize parameters such as accuracy and device size. Consequently, the CGM industry is increasingly facing a predicament where the market is not yet saturated, but profit margins are being squeezed.

Abbott’s dual-analyte sensor represents a proactive attempt at differentiated competition, leveraging its experience in the diabetes field to open up a new competitive dimension for CGM manufacturers: DKA risk.

According to the announcement,Libre Duo updates glucose and ketone levels simultaneously every minute, enabling people with diabetes to achieve continuous ketone monitoring for the first time without traditional blood or urine tests.. The Libre Duo system has not yet been approved or sold in the United States, and Abbott plans to launch it in select European countries in 2026.

As commercialization has not yet commenced, market acceptance of Libre Duo remains to be validated; however, the industry has already demonstrated significant attention toward it.

Just one week after Libre Duo received CE marking, MiniMed announced an expanded partnership with Abbott, proposing the full integration of a customized dual-sensor system into its entire range of smart drug delivery systems.

Based on the content of the agreement,Both companies plan to sequentially announce product approval milestones and commercialization-related progress in the coming months.

Notably, in March this year, MiniMed announced that its MiniMed 780G automated insulin delivery system had received CE certification for use with Abbott’s Instinct continuous glucose monitoring sensor, marking an increasingly close business partnership between the two companies.

After MiniMed's Independent IPO

Accelerating Collaboration with Abbott

MiniMed was one of the earliest players in the CGM sector, launching the world’s first commercial CGM in the late 1990s. In 2021, Medtronic acquired MiniMed at a premium price due to its potential, subsequently integrating it into Medtronic’s Diabetes Business Unit.

In 2025, Medtronic officially announced a major strategic adjustment, planning to spin off its diabetes business into an independent company. In March this year, MiniMed was listed on the U.S. stock market as an independent company, but Medtronic remains the absolute controlling shareholder of MiniMed.

Prior to MiniMed becoming an independent company, as a key division of Medtronic, it had already established in-depth collaboration with Abbott, whereby Abbott developed proprietary CGM sensors and Medtronic marketed them under an OEM arrangement.

Given Abbott and Medtronic’s prominent industry standing, their partnership in 2024 was hailed as a “powerhouse duo,” with both companies’ stock prices rising in tandem on the day the collaboration was officially announced. Moreover, financial reports from Abbott and Medtronic indicate that both firms achieved tangible performance boosts in their diabetes product lines.

Following its spin-off from Medtronic, Abbott’s partnership with MiniMed entered a new phase.First, the two parties will be able to move beyond the previously subtle competitive dynamics, allowing their collaboration to return to a more pure focus on technology and business.

Furthermore, from a corporate strategy perspective, MiniMed needs to establish its own market position after the spin-off, and deeper and more differentiated cooperation with Abbott will be an important opportunity to build competitiveness.

For Abbott, the partnership with MiniMed will further amplify its economies of scale. In addition to being sold as a standalone product, Libre DuoIt can also secure a large base of insulin pump users in advance., and this group's willingness to pay is also generally higher than that of standalone CGM users.

On the other hand, in the increasingly competitive CGM landscape, the ceiling for hardware competition has begun to emerge. The shift from single-parameter monitoring to multi-parameter health management has become an inevitable trend and represents Abbott’s strategic choice to maintain its leading market share in the CGM sector.
