According to foreign media reports on the 2nd,U.S. Government Announces on Thursday It Will Abandon Gilead’s Coronavirus DrugRemdesivircontrol over the supply, thereby ending the five-month allocation managed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), with Gilead selling remdesivir, marketed as Veklury, directly to U.S. hospitals based on market demand. By the end of this year, AmerisourceBergen will remain the sole distributor of remdesivir in the United States.Distributor。
Remdesivir is one of the few drugs that have been approved by the United StatesFDAOne of the drugs approved for the treatment of COVID-19. Since being granted emergency use authorization in May, remdesivir has been in short supply. Previously, Gilead Sciences announced that it would donate 1.5 million doses of remdesivir to the United States free of charge, but the donated stock was exhausted by July this year.
Due to supply shortages and significant issues with centralized allocation, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) ultimately returned control of remdesivir distribution to Gilead Sciences. Subsequently, Gilead priced the drug at $3,120 per five-day treatment course and stated that it could now meet current and future U.S. demand for remdesivir, even under a potential worst-case scenario involving a substantial surge in cases during the fall.
With the pricing of remdesivir yet to be announced, there has been ongoing debate about what price point would be necessary to recoup costs. During the conference call following the release of its first-quarter financial results, Gilead’s management disclosed that the estimated cost of remdesivir for this year could reach $1 billion.
Based on a price of $3,120 per treatment course, foreign media cited Tim Anderson, an analyst at Wolfe Research, as predicting that Remdesivir’s peak sales in 2020 and 2021 would be slightly below $3 billion. However, Gilead Sciences expects to sell approximately 1 million to 1.5 million treatment courses this year, generating around $3.5 billion in revenue.
Currently, Gilead Sciences is seeking full FDA approval for the investigational COVID-19 drug remdesivir, which is being used under emergency authorization, and has already submitted an application. Meanwhile, Eli Lilly recently stated that a study by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) showed that adding the rheumatoid arthritis drug Olumiant to Gilead’s medication could help patients recover more quickly.
