On October 2, Johnson & Johnson announced the successful acquisition of Momenta for $6.5 billion, expanding its footprint in the field of autoimmune diseases. This transaction marks the largest merger and acquisition deal in the U.S. pharmaceutical industry this year. The previous major acquisition occurred in March, when Gilead agreed to acquire the biotechnology company Forty Seven for $4.9 billion.
Momenta is a company developing novel therapies and drugs for autoimmune diseases, with its R&D pipeline focused on Fc-related modalities, including FcRn antibodies, highly sialylated IgG, and Fc polymers. Under the terms of the acquisition, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, will be able to utilize Nipocalimab, an experimental therapy (an FcRn antibody) developed by Momenta.
