Merck Reports Strong Q3 2020 Results: Keytruda Global Sales Reach $10.387 Billion Year-to-Date

On October 27, Merck & Co., Inc. announced its financial results for the third quarter of 2020, with revenue reaching $12.551 billion, a year-on-year increase of 1%; pharmaceutical business revenue amounted to $11.320 billion, representing a 2% year-on-year growth. For the first three quarters of 2020, Merck & Co., Inc. reported cumulative revenue of $35.479 billion, reflecting a 1% year-on-year increase.

From the oncology perspective, MSD’s Keytruda generated sales of $3.715 billion in Q3 2020, representing a 21% increase; of this, U.S. revenue amounted to $2.2 billion, with indications other than lung cancer contributing approximately 50% of sales. Cumulative revenue for Keytruda in the first three quarters of 2020 reached $10.387 billion, a 31% increase. Furthermore, Lynparza (olaparib) and Lenvima (lenvatinib), developed through MSD’s deep strategic collaborations with AstraZeneca and Eisai, respectively, achieved growth rates of 58% and 29% in Q3 2020.

Gardasil/Gardasil 9 vaccine products have gradually begun to recover from the impact of COVID-19, with sales of $1.187 billion in Q3 2020, a year-on-year decrease of 10%. The cumulative revenue for the first three quarters of 2020 was $2.941 billion, representing a year-on-year decline of 2%.

Regionally, MSD’s revenue in China for the third quarter of 2020 amounted to $990 million, representing a 10% year-on-year increase. Cumulative revenue for the first three quarters of 2020 reached $2.646 billion, surpassing Japan to become MSD’s third-largest global market after the United States and the European Union.

In the development of COVID-19 therapeutics and vaccines, MSD disclosed in its financial report that it has initiated two pivotal Phase II/III clinical studies for Molnupiravir (MK-4482), an oral antiviral candidate developed in collaboration with Ridgeback Bio. One study plans to enroll 1,450 adult outpatients with COVID-19, while the other aims to recruit 1,300 adult inpatients with COVID-19. The vaccine candidate V591 has entered Phase I clinical trials, and V590 is poised to enter Phase I clinical trials.
