“During the exceptional period when the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the globe, the third China International Import Expo (CIIE) was held as scheduled, demonstrating the Chinese government’s confidence in resolutely winning the battle against the epidemic and its high-level prevention and control capabilities,” said Yang Peng, President of Danaher China. “As a ‘regular participant’ since the inception of the CIIE three years ago, Danaher will leverage this excellent platform to work together with global partners to further strengthen communication and resource sharing. Particularly during this special time, China’s economy has taken the lead in showing signs of recovery, and its super-sized market scale provides a favorable opportunity for global economic recovery, driving worldwide economic growth. Danaher Corporation and all its operating companies will continue to support the strategic deployment of the Healthy China Initiative with our unwavering commitment to unlocking life’s infinite potential.”

One-Stop Solution for Combating the Novel Coronavirus: Joining Forces to Chart a New Blueprint for Pandemic Response

As epidemic prevention and control become normalized and the influenza season approaches, clinicians will encounter a range of viral infections with clinical symptoms similar to those of COVID-19. At this year’s China International Import Expo (CIIE), Danaher, together with its operating company Cepheid, showcased a rapid molecular diagnostic test kit that has just received Emergency Use Authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This product enables highly sensitive, simultaneous detection of four viruses with similar symptomatic presentations in patient samples using a single test kit. It provides qualitative detection of SARS-CoV-2, influenza A, influenza B, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), delivering results in just 36 minutes. By offering practical diagnostic support for clinical decision-making, it significantly alleviates pressure on healthcare systems and helps mitigate the risk of epidemic transmission.

During this year’s China International Import Expo (CIIE), Danaher will also invite Professor Zhang Wenhong, Director of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University; Professor Lu Hongzhou, Party Secretary of Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center; Professor Hao Xiaoke, Director of the PLA Institute of Clinical Laboratory Medicine at Xijing Hospital; Professor Wu Wenjuan, Director of the Clinical Laboratory Department at the South Campus of Dongfang Hospital Affiliated to Tongji University in Shanghai; and Professor Tang Yiwei, Chief Medical Officer for Danaher Diagnostics Platform in China. They will participate in a roundtable discussion focusing on responses to public health challenges and reflections on the role of medical laboratory testing within the industry. This year, a sudden major epidemic outbreak has drawn widespread attention from both the healthcare system and the general public to public health issues. Under the current normalized epidemic prevention and control conditions, there is an even greater need for simple, accurate, safe, and rapid point-of-care/bedside testing methods for SARS-CoV-2. Such methods can not only relatively reduce the probability of viral transmission but also mitigate, to a certain extent, the risk of renewed outbreaks. This situation also presents significant challenges to laboratory medicine and its associated technologies.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020, Danaher has consistently upheld the principle of prioritizing life, working alongside Chinese researchers, healthcare professionals, and patients on the front lines of the epidemic response in areas such as SARS-CoV-2 testing, diagnosis of infections and critical care conditions, and the research, development, and production of COVID-19 vaccines.

Danaher supports frontline diagnostic efforts in the fight against the pandemic across laboratories, critical care point-of-care testing, molecular diagnostics, histopathology, and quality control, leveraging comprehensive diagnostic workflows and innovative, precision diagnostic solutions. It enables intelligent end-to-end management from sample collection to reporting, assists in diagnosis, and eliminates the need for manual intervention during the testing process, thereby reducing the risk of viral transmission. By establishing a sealed, isolated environment that creates a “complete closed-loop” for testing, Danaher has built a rapidly deployable, infrastructure-free green life channel for patients, saving precious time in critical situations.

In supporting the research, development, and production of COVID-19 vaccines, Danaher’s operating companies have spared no effort in contributing their respective strengths. For instance, Beckman Coulter’s flow cytometers, Molecular Devices’ high-content imaging analysis systems, Pall’s iCELLis fixed-bed bioreactors, Cytiva’s culture media, microcarriers, chromatography, and filtration solutions, as well as Hach’s TL23 series turbidimeters, have all provided indispensable support to vaccine R&D and manufacturing through their outstanding system performance and stability.

Deepening Strategic Cooperation, Rooted in China to Support Localized Development

The China International Import Expo (CIIE) is not only a venue for showcasing cutting-edge global technologies, but also a communication platform fostering multi-party collaboration among government, enterprises, academia, and research institutions, as well as a trade platform that transforms “exhibits” into “commercial products.” During this year’s CIIE, Danaher expects to reach nearly 20 cooperation intentions and sign strategic agreements with diverse partners, including governments at all levels, peers in the pharmaceutical industry, third-party independent laboratories, platform distributors, and healthcare institutions.

To facilitate breakthrough progress in the Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone’s development of advanced, specialized clinical medical centers and R&D translation bases for cutting-edge medical technologies, Danaher signed a memorandum of cooperation with Hainan Boao Lecheng International Medical. Leveraging Danaher’s internationally leading medical scientific achievements and advanced management capabilities, this partnership supports the Pilot Zone in achieving “triple synchronization” of medical technologies, equipment, and pharmaceuticals with international advanced standards. Additionally, witnessed by the Health Commission of Hainan Province, Danaher Corporation signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Nanhai Health Industry Research Institute. The parties plan to establish a County-Level Hospital Capacity Building Training Center in Hainan Province, carrying out smart laboratory construction and capacity-building training for more than ten county-level hospitals in the region. This initiative aims to enhance the specialization, standardization, and internationalization of healthcare and public health services in Hainan, while also advancing the development of smart healthcare in the province.

Meanwhile, as one of the first leading enterprises to settle in the Shanghai Waigaoqiao International Medical Device Exhibition and Trading Center, Danaher signed a memorandum of cooperation with the operational center company under Waigaoqiao Group Co., Ltd. during the China International Import Expo. This collaboration aims to participate in activities such as the exhibition, promotion, exchange, and training for several innovative medical diagnostic and life science-related products under its portfolio, thereby accelerating the introduction of these innovations into the Chinese market.

To further strengthen the advantages of precision imaging diagnosis and improve the clinical efficiency of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, Danaher and GE HealthCare have signed a strategic cooperation memorandum. By leveraging the superior resources of GE HealthCare and Mammotome, the partnership aims to create a strong alliance with complementary strengths in products, channels, and customer resources. The two parties will jointly promote the market for breast tumor solutions, advance breast imaging biopsy solutions, establish model hospitals featuring integrated clinical breast care solutions, and foster cross-departmental collaborations between radiology and breast surgery. These efforts are designed to help physicians achieve faster, more convenient, and more precise breast cancer diagnoses, support hospitals in making superior clinical and operational decisions, and extend high-quality medical resources to benefit more patients.

The Danaher Diagnostics Platform will also partner with Guangzhou KingMed Diagnostics Group to focus on infectious diseases. Leveraging the Respiratory Disease Institute, which works closely with KingMed, and an alliance of more than 20 leading Grade A tertiary hospitals across China, the collaboration will advance real-world data research and subsequent application of new technologies, including Beckman’s MDW and COVID-19 antibody assays, as well as Cepheid’s innovative pathogen diagnostics portfolio. This initiative will strengthen cooperation between Danaher and KingMed in the research, translation, and application of new technologies.

Danaher’s diagnostics platform will also sign a letter of intent for strategic cooperation with Shaanxi Baimi Gene Co., Ltd., a leading medical testing service provider in Northwest China, to jointly establish a research and development center in Xi’an. Targeting urgent clinical needs in areas such as pharmacogenomics, women’s health, and autoimmune diseases, the two parties will collaboratively develop digital intelligent solutions for regional medical testing centers, carry out R&D on laboratory-developed tests (LDTs), and promote the industrialization of related products, thereby addressing specific clinical demands in China.

Danaher Corporation’s Diagnostics Platform is one of the four key pillars of Danaher’s business in China. To further expand the platform’s capabilities in manufacturing, research and development (R&D), and customer support, Danaher invested over USD 100 million this July to establish a new R&D and manufacturing base, along with an integrated customer experience center, in the Suzhou Industrial Park. This facility will support the long-term growth in China of its four operating companies—Beckman Coulter Diagnostics, Radiometer, HemoCue, and Cepheid—and deliver localized innovative solutions tailored to the Chinese market.

The Danaher Life Sciences Platform, another key component of Danaher’s operations in China, will be showcased at the Life Sciences section of the Danaher booth. Upholding its vision in China of “Sharing Global Science and Technology to Improve Health for All,” the platform presents integrated life sciences research solutions that comprehensively demonstrate its capabilities spanning from fundamental life sciences research to biopharmaceutical industry development, and from precision medicine research to clinical translation. It provides innovative technologies and analytical diagnostic tools for the analysis of proteins, biologics, and chemical drugs. During the China International Import Expo (CIIE), the platform signed memoranda of cooperation with China Scientific Instrument & Equipment Corporation and several medical institutions.

Cytiva, a global technology and service provider dedicated to advancing and accelerating biopharmaceutical R&D and manufacturing, made its debut at the China International Import Expo (CIIE) under a new brand identity following its integration into Danaher Corporation. Highlighting its dual focus on “localization” and “industry empowerment,” Cytiva showcased its remarkable mission to “push the boundaries of unseen technologies and accelerate extraordinary therapies.” During the CIIE, Cytiva, now part of the Danaher family, also announced a strategic partnership with Weigao Pharmaceutical. The company will make additional investments to expand Phase II of its single-use consumables production facility for bioprocessing, building on the success of Phase I to effectively meet the growing demand for single-use products in China’s and the global biopharmaceutical industries.

Leading InternationallyDBSManagement System, Aligned with Local Needs of the Chinese Market

Danaher Business System (DBS) is Danaher Corporation’s proprietary lean management system, which has helped make Danaher one of the most valuable companies for investors worldwide. In China, Danaher fully leverages the core principles of DBS lean management to launch the DBS Laboratory Lean Management Project. This initiative helps Chinese clinical laboratories address growing testing demands by focusing on process optimization, waste elimination, problem identification and resolution, improved managerial efficiency, and the establishment of a culture of lean, high-efficiency management. It enables effective utilization of existing resources, enhances satisfaction among patients and clinical departments, facilitates the transformation of laboratories from technology-focused to management-oriented entities, and achieves true sustainable development. Furthermore, DBS lean management is an integral component of Danaher’s comprehensive laboratory solutions. Together with digitalization, automation, cloud-based, and intelligent solutions, it helps build smart medical laboratories and drives clinical laboratory medicine into a new era of intelligence.

Meanwhile, as the healthcare reform’s tiered diagnosis and treatment system advances and new national requirements for testing capabilities in county-level public hospitals emerge in the post-pandemic era, Danaher has made serving the county-level medical market a strategic priority. In addition to helping county-level medical institutions address equipment and platform deficiencies, Danaher is committed to personnel training, enhancing both their hardware capabilities and soft power development. Taking pathology as an example, a key bottleneck constraining the development of county-level hospitals is the scarcity of pathology professionals. Leica Biosystems, Danaher’s century-old subsidiary, offers comprehensive pathology department solutions to help build world-class pathology departments, enabling county-level hospitals to overcome bottlenecks, perform surgical procedures, and improve operational efficiency. Coupled with management capability training for county-level hospitals at the platform level, these efforts will significantly strengthen the service delivery capacity of county-level medical consortia.

“Danaher China’s strategic goal for the next five years is to ‘establish a foothold in China and serve China,’ evolving into a group company driven primarily by localized innovation. The ultimate objective is to identify hidden gems within the industry at the platform level and connect them through the thread of DBS (Danaher Business System) lean management. The deepening and upgrading of multinational corporations’ localization strategies in China cannot be achieved without comprehensively building relationships with the Chinese government and diverse partners within the healthcare ecosystem. The China International Import Expo (CIIE) provides opportunities and a platform for enterprises and various sectors to jointly build new, win-win cooperative partnerships. Against the macro backdrop of future cross-industry collaboration and integrated development, only in this way can we truly unlock greater potential and create more value for society,” stated Peng Yang, President of Danaher China.

Rainer M. Blair, Global President and CEO of Danaher, expressed regret at being unable to attend the current China International Import Expo (CIIE) in person, but also conveyed his excitement and pride in Danaher Corporation’s efforts and achievements in combating the pandemic both in China and globally. He stated, “At Danaher, our goal is to provide innovative, internationally leading localized solutions that help customers address unmet market needs. Particularly in the context of normalized pandemic conditions, public health and public safety have garnered significant public attention. Danaher has supported the fight against COVID-19 on multiple fronts, contributing jointly to the normalized prevention and control of the epidemic. We look forward to further showcasing our innovation strength in the healthcare sector at the third CIIE, deepening our collaboration with the Chinese government, industry partners, and biomedical professionals to jointly write a promising new chapter for the future.”
