Recently, MDO Magazine released the 2020 “BIG 100”—the Top 100 Global Medical Device Companies.
2020 was a challenging year for global medical device companies. The 100 companies on this year’s list collectively generated substantial revenues of $420.5 billion, representing an increase of nearly 6% compared to the total revenue of the top 100 companies in 2019. As the data reflects revenues from the previous year, the impact of the pandemic may only become apparent in next year’s rankings.
Impacted by COVID-19, hospitals were preoccupied with epidemic prevention, non-urgent surgeries were suspended, and a large number of patients left, significantly affecting the performance of medical device companies in the first half of the year. It was not until the third quarter that major companies generally reported a rebound in surgical volumes. However, as a new wave of the pandemic sweeps across the globe, whether this upward trend can be sustained remains to be seen.
As humanity confronts this disease crisis, medical device companies, alongside pharmaceutical firms, are striving to make significant and impactful contributions. For instance, in late March, Medtronic released its ventilator design specifications for reference by other manufacturers to accelerate global ventilator production. Many medical device companies also serve as producers and suppliers of epidemic prevention equipment. Examples include GE Healthcare and Philips, which supply ventilators and patient monitors; Fresenius Medical Care and Baxter, which provide dialysis equipment; and Cardinal Health, 3M, and McKesson, which are key suppliers of protective items such as masks and gloves, among others.
As many are aware, because some medical device companies have later fiscal year-ends, the ranking of the Top 100 Medical Device Companies is released after the Top 100 Pharmaceutical Companies ranking. The “BIG 100” list continues to be compiled by the magazine’s editors, who gather financial data from each company for the previous year—including annual revenue, R&D expenditure, and employee count—and ultimately rank the companies based on the annual revenue generated by their healthcare business segments.
According to the rankings, the top ten medical device companies are Medtronic, Johnson & Johnson, Philips, GE HealthCare, EssilorLuxottica, Siemens Healthineers, Cardinal Health, Stryker, McKesson, and Danaher. Among them, the rankings of Medtronic, Johnson & Johnson, Philips, GE HealthCare, Siemens Healthineers, and Cardinal Health remained unchanged.
