Today, AstraZeneca announced that the interim analysis results of the Phase 3 clinical program for the candidate COVID-19 vaccine AZD1222, conducted by the University of Oxford, have been peer-reviewed and published in The Lancet. Based on data from 131 symptomatic COVID-19 cases accumulated among 11,636 participants, the analysis demonstrated that the vaccine is safe and effective in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 and can prevent severe disease and hospitalization.
Analysis of the efficacy in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 showed that vaccine efficacy was 62.1% (n=8,895; CI 41.0%-75.7%) when administered as two full doses, and 90.0% (n=2,741; CI 67.4%-97.0%) in subjects who received a half dose followed by a full dose.
In the prevention of severe COVID-19, no hospitalizations or severe cases of COVID-19 were observed in the vaccine group 21 days after the first dose. In the control group, 10 participants were hospitalized due to COVID-19, among whom 2 were assessed as severe cases, including 1 fatal case.
In terms of safety, the currently accumulated safety data are derived from over 20,000 participants in four clinical trials conducted in the United Kingdom, Brazil, and South Africa. AZD1222 demonstrated a favorable safety and tolerability profile, with rates of serious adverse events reported at 0.7% in the vaccine group and 0.8% in the control group.
