Today, Merck & Co., Inc. (MSD) announced that its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Kenneth C. Frazier, will retire on June 30 this year. Mr. Frazier will continue to serve as Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of MSD to ensure a seamless transition. This marks another significant leadership change at MSD following the earlier retirement of Dr. Roger M. Perlmutter, President of Merck Research Laboratories, at the beginning of this year.

Mr. Frazier joined Merck & Co., Inc. (known as MSD outside the United States and Canada) in 1992, becoming a veteran with nearly 30 years of service at the company. In 2011, he became the Chief Executive Officer of Merck, working alongside Dr. Roger M. Perlmutter, who assumed the role of President of Merck Research Laboratories in 2013, to help build Merck’s oncology R&D pipeline headlined by the blockbuster PD-1 inhibitor Keytruda. Today, Keytruda has become one of the cornerstones of cancer immunotherapy, transforming the landscape of cancer treatment worldwide. Since its initial approval in the United States, it has gained approval for more than 25 indications.

Under Mr. Frazier’s leadership, MSD also launched multiple life-saving innovative drugs and vaccines, including the HPV vaccine Gardasil 9, and collaborated with AstraZeneca to develop the PARP inhibitor Lynparza, as well as jointly developed Lenvima with Eisai.

Merck & Co., Inc. also announced that its board of directors unanimously elected Robert M. Davis, the company’s current Chief Financial Officer (CFO), as the next Chief Executive Officer. He will officially assume the role on July 1 this year. Prior to joining Merck as CFO in 2014, Mr. Davis held positions at Eli Lilly and Company and Baxter International.

“It has been a great honor for me to serve as CEO of MSD over the past decade, working alongside our most dedicated and talented employees and managers,” said Mr. Frazier. “I look forward to collaborating with Mr. Davis to help MSD achieve even greater success.”
