Cataracts are a common age-related disease, with the number of new patients rising rapidly each year. Replacing the diseased lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is a highly effective treatment. Recently, reporters learned from the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area that an IOL independently developed by a Tianjin-based enterprise has received market approval, offering cataract patients a more affordable, high-quality domestically produced alternative.

It is reported that the high-order hydrophilic aspheric foldable intraocular lens, independently developed by Tianjin Century Healthcare Biomedical Engineering Co., Ltd., has obtained the Class III medical device registration certificate issued by the National Medical Products Administration. The approved product had already received EU CE certification in February 2020 and underwent a two-year clinical trial in multiple hospitals across China. The results demonstrated that the efficacy of the product was non-inferior to that of equivalent imported products, with postoperative visual acuity in cataract patients achieving ideal outcomes.

A relevant official from Tianjin Century Healthcare Biomedical Engineering Co., Ltd. stated that currently, foreign manufacturers hold 80% of the market share for intraocular lenses (IOLs) in cataract surgeries in China, while domestically produced IOLs account for less than 20%. The launch of their product series is expected to significantly increase the market share of domestic products in the high-end IOL market in China.
