March 23 News: The WEGO (Shanghai) International Research Institute project has officially commenced construction. The project covers an area of approximately 61 mu, with an expected built-up property area of 120,000 square meters. The total investment in the project exceeds RMB 1.8 billion.
 
According to available information, WEGO was founded in 1988 and is one of the leading enterprises in China's medical device industry. Its main business includes disposable medical devices and pharmaceuticals. The group comprises seven industrial sectors: medical products, blood purification, orthopedics, medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, cardiovascular consumables, and medical commerce. It is a global manufacturer offering comprehensive, safe, and reliable medical system solutions. The company has received numerous honors, including being designated as a National 863 Industrialization Base, a Key High-Tech Enterprise under the National Torch Program, a National Intellectual Property Demonstration Enterprise, an Industry Leader, one of China's Top 500 Enterprises, and a nominee for the China Quality Award.
 
It is reported that the WEGO International Research Institute aims to rapidly introduce international talent and project resources, strengthen its scientific research layout, promote the rapid growth of new products, new businesses, and new industries, upgrade and transform existing industrial and business structures, and drive the comprehensive high-quality development of WEGO. The WEGO International Research Institute will focus on building an industrial layout comprising “one headquarters, one platform, four R&D centers, four operational centers, and one shared innovation center.” The aforementioned “four R&D centers” refer to the R&D Centers for Polymer Materials, Tissue Engineering and Repair, Intelligent Medical Equipment, and Life Sciences Products.
 
Additionally, in line with its strategic positioning, the WEGO Medical Commercial Center will provide healthcare institutions and end-users with comprehensive medical device solutions and services centered on supply chain management. The International Operations Center will establish operational hubs for nephrology products, orthopedic products, foods for special medical purposes (FSMP), and life science products, thereby creating a full-industry-chain service platform. The Shared Innovation Center will attract upstream and downstream partners as well as independent R&D teams to settle in, offering premium research and development environments to foster industrial clustering and build an ecosystem for the introduction, R&D, production, and commercialization of medical devices.
 
Minhang is a cluster area for the biopharmaceutical industry in Shanghai and one of the city’s “1+5+X” specialized industrial parks. Home to more than 450 biopharmaceutical companies, Minhang has consistently ranked second among all districts in terms of biopharmaceutical output value. In recent years, Minhang has signed agreements for 18 major industrial projects, including those with Innovent Biologics, Yunnan Baiyao, Alphamab Oncology, Lepu Biopharma, Sansure Biotech, and Porton Pharma, with total investment exceeding RMB 12 billion, thereby building strong momentum for the development of its biopharmaceutical sector.
