Ningbo, Zhejiang, April 13, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Recently, the first Johnson & Johnson Vision "Catalys" femtosecond laser system for ophthalmic surgery in China was successfully installed and commissioned at Ningbo Eye Hospital. This marks the first installation of the "Catalys" device by Johnson & Johnson Vision in China following its registration approval from the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) earlier this year. The rapid deployment of this innovative product will bring renewed hope to more cataract patients, not only enriching surgical treatment options for cataracts but also further advancing the development of the cataract treatment industry.

Johnson & Johnson AMO “Catalys” Ophthalmic Femtosecond Laser System
Cataracts are currently the leading cause of blindness worldwide. In China, the prevalence of cataracts among individuals aged 60 to 89 years is approximately 80%. Surgery is the only scientifically proven treatment for cataracts. With the continuous advancement of diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, cataract surgery has transitioned from the era of vision-restoring procedures to the era of refractive cataract surgery, where patients not only regain sight but also achieve clear vision. This shift imposes higher demands on the precision of surgical techniques and the selection of intraocular lenses (IOLs). As a state-of-the-art femtosecond laser treatment system globally, the Catalys LenSx system offers high accuracy and precision, thereby delivering superior postoperative outcomes for patients.
Johnson & Johnson’s AMO “Catalys” was first introduced into China in 2019 through the “pilot trial” policy of the Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone in Hainan, and received registration approval from the National Medical Products Administration this January, becoming the first large-scale medical device approved for registration in China based on real-world data studies conducted in Boao.
The first “Catalys” femtosecond laser system is expected to be officially put into clinical use at Ningbo Eye Hospital in mid-to-late April, enabling more cataract patients in Ningbo and surrounding areas to benefit from this innovative technology and enjoy clear, healthy vision.
