Novartis Ophthalmic Drug Beovu Receives First-Ever Injection in China at Boao, Hainan

On April 13, under the guidance of the Hainan Provincial Health Commission, the Hainan Provincial Medical Products Administration, and Haikou Customs, the Second Boao Lecheng “Never-Ending” International Innovative Drugs and Medical Devices Exhibition, hosted by the Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone Administration, was held in the Boao Lecheng Pilot Zone.

During the “Never-Ending” International Innovative Drugs and Medical Devices Exhibition, Novartis’ next-generation anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) drug Beovu® (brolucizumab, also known as RTH258), indicated for the treatment of neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), was administered for the first time in China at Hainan Boao Super Hospital. Beovu® is currently the only approved anti-VEGF therapy worldwide that allows for dosing every three months after the loading phase.

“Pilot and First-Trial” Policy Exerts Force, Promoting Synchronization of Domestic Drugs and Medical Devices with International Standards

The Hainan Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone (hereinafter referred to as the “Lecheng Pilot Zone”) is the only national international medical tourism industrial park approved by the State Council in 2013. It enjoys preferential policies, including accelerated import registration and approval for medical devices and pharmaceuticals, as well as market access for medical technologies for clinical application and research. In March 2018, Boao Super Hospital commenced operations. Leveraging preferential policies such as “special access and pioneering trials,” domestic patients can now access cutting-edge international treatments, including advanced pharmaceuticals and medical devices, without needing to seek medical care overseas.

The injection was administered by the team led by Professor Qu Jia at the International Optometry and Ophthalmology Center of Boao Super Hospital. Leveraging the specialized expertise of Professor Qu Jia’s team, who serves as the Dean of the Wenzhou Medical University Eye Hospital Group, along with the “Nine National Measures” special medical policies available in the Lecheng Pilot Zone, the International Optometry and Ophthalmology Center of Boao Super Hospital has become a Chinese window for the application of global innovative ophthalmic technologies.
