Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter, that Elon Musk’s brain-computer interface company Neuralink plans to raise approximately $500 million (roughly RMB 3.648 billion at current exchange rates) at a pre-money valuation of $8.5 billion (roughly RMB 62.013 billion at current exchange rates). Sources revealed that the company has begun preliminary discussions with potential investors, but the financing terms have not yet been finalized.

Neuralink’s valuation has grown significantly in recent years. In 2023, the company was valued at approximately $5 billion, based on private stock transaction prices. Previously, Neuralink raised $280 million in a funding round led by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund.

Neuralink is currently testing its brain-computer interface implant, which is designed to assist patients with spinal cord injuries. The device has already enabled the first patient to control a computer directly with their brain, allowing them to play games, browse the internet, post on social media, and move the cursor on a laptop.

In 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initially rejected Neuralink’s application to conduct clinical trials due to safety concerns. However, the agency subsequently approved its request for clinical trials, which are currently underway.

Elon Musk has grand visions for the future of Neuralink. He has stated that the company’s chips could not only assist individuals with disabilities but also enable healthy people to treat conditions such as obesity, autism, depression, and schizophrenia through rapid surgical implantation of the devices. Furthermore, he envisions these devices being used for web browsing and even achieving telepathy.

Notably, in February this year, Reuters reported that the FDA had attempted to recall some of its dismissed scientists, including those who had participated in the review of Neuralink’s devices, to reassess the relevant technologies.

Meanwhile, Neuralink’s competitor, Synchron, is also testing a similar brain-computer interface implant designed to help patients with motor impairments type on computers.
