Therapeutic Principle
The principle of using vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) to treat hypertension involves selectively stimulating the baroreceptor fibers in the left vagus nerve, while avoiding concurrent stimulation of other vagal segments. This selectivity can be achieved using a novel multi-contact cuff electrode (MCE) made of polyimide and containing more than ten contacts.
Preclinical studies have demonstrated that blood pressure in rats can be reduced to 40% of baseline without causing significant bradycardia. Interference with commonly used antihypertensive drugs appears to be minimal. This method of activating the baroreflex seems to maintain lowered blood pressure even in the absence of continuous stimulation and is synchronized with the electrocardiogram (ECG).
