AI Drug Discovery Companies After the Failure of In-House Drug DevelopmentVerge Genomics Decides to Transition into a Platform Company

Recently, Verge Genomics announced its renaming toVerge Labs, as an artificial intelligence laboratory, will build foundational models of human disease biology based on proprietary brain data, providing drug developers with data to identify and screen for the most promising therapeutic targets.

AI Drug Development Failure

Verge Genomics was founded in 2015, initially as an AI-driven pharmaceutical company, and with its uniqueCONVERGE’s end-to-end drug discovery platform has rapidly risen to prominence, making it a star enterprise in the AI-driven pharmaceutical industry.

Verge Genomics, based on its proprietaryVerge Genomics’ AI platform, CONVERGE, has developed a drug candidate, VRG50635. VRG50635 is a potent, orally bioavailable PIKfyve inhibitor.PIKfyve isBased on findings from the CONVERGE platformAmyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)Potential Therapeutic Targets.

Notably, VRG50635 is one of the first AI platform-developed drugs globally to enter clinical trials.—VRG50635 officially launched its Phase I clinical trial in October 2022, with the first patient dosed. It took only four years for VRG50635 to progress from discovery to clinical development.

However, as time progressed to December 15, 2025,Verge Terminated VRG50635clinical research. According to
ClinicalTrials.gov shows that the reason for study termination is “The sponsor terminated the study due to a lack of risk-benefit data.”。

According to the information disclosed at the time, the primary reason was that VRG50635 failed to meet the prespecified efficacy analysis criteria in its Phase 1 clinical trial, leading to the decision to terminate its development.

VergeTransformation

In fact, when VRG50635 was declared a failure,Verge Genomics began to consider discontinuing drug development in favor of focusing on its AI platform, CONVERGE.

Recently,Verge Genomics has fully announced its transformation, even changing its company name toVerge Labs。

According to the disclosure,Verge Labs will in the future operate as aAI Lab, leveraging a proprietary multimodal central nervous system patient dataset comprising over 12,000 human brain samples for trainingCutting-edge models to predict patient response to treatment.

Verge Genomics stated that nine out of ten drug trials failed, with the most common cause being incorrect targets tested in the wrong patients.

Brain tissue constitutes the molecular foundation of neurological diseases. Verge Labs will apply its AI architecture to its proprietary dataset, VergeDB, integrating data from blood, cerebrospinal fluid, imaging, and clinical records of living patients to generate virtual biopsies. This approach creates simulated molecular images of the patient’s brain from a simple blood draw, which are then matched with patient profiles and treatment regimens to predict disease progression and anticipate biomarker responses to specific interventions prior to clinical trials.

In summary, Verge Labs’ future business model should focus on identifying drug targets, identifying potential patient populations, and predicting novel biomarkers for partners in the field of neuroscience.

Furthermore, as part of the restructuring of Verge Genomics, the company also hired personnel fromFour experts from Altos Labs, Calico, PostEra, and Flatiron.
