Pharmaceutical R&D Developer
On June 29, 2021, Sanofi announced it would invest approximately €400 million annually to establish its first mRNA vaccine Center of Excellence. The center will consolidate approximately 400 employees from multiple research centers in Cambridge, USA, and Lyon, France, to form a dedicated R&D team aimed at accelerating the end-to-end research, development, and delivery of next-generation mRNA vaccines. The press release noted that the mRNA vaccines developed at this center will not be limited to pandemic indications, but will also target the routine prevention of diseases with high unmet medical needs. Sanofi expects to have at least six clinical-stage vaccine candidates by 2025.
The Center of Excellence will advance the collaboration agreement between Sanofi Pasteur, Sanofi’s vaccine division, and Translate Bio, which was reached in 2018 and expanded in 2020, to develop an innovative mRNA vaccine portfolio. Just this month, the next-generation mRNA seasonal influenza vaccine jointly developed by the two parties has initiated Phase 1 clinical trials.
