The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is a non-ministerial department in the United Kingdom. It was launched in shadow form on October 1, 2013, and became fully operational on April 1, 2014, with the responsibility of strengthening business competition and preventing and reducing anti-competitive activities.
On July 14, AstraZeneca announced that the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has approved its acquisition of Alexion Pharmaceuticals ("Alexion"). Consequently, the acquisition is expected to close on July 21, 2021. Upon completion of the acquisition, a group focused on rare diseases will be established. This group will be named "Alexion, AstraZeneca Rare Disease" and will be headquartered in Boston, USA.
