BOAO, Hainan, Aug. 1, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Johnson & Johnson Surgical Vision -- Johnson & Johnson Vision announced today that its new generation of enhanced extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lens (IOL) family has officially launched at the Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone in Hainan. As an advanced international medical technology specially approved for import, two first-ever implantation surgeries in mainland China were successfully completed at the International Optometry and Ophthalmology Center of Boao Super Hospital.
This series includes two groundbreaking innovative products from Johnson & Johnson Vision—the TECNIS Synergy, a next-generation extended depth of focus intraocular lens featuring an enhanced diffractive grating integrated with multifocal technology, and the TECNIS Eyhance, the first-generation extended depth of focus intraocular lens with a diffractive-ring-free design, which are used for intraocular lens implantation in ophthalmic surgery to help patients achieve clear vision across all distances.

"We are pleased to see that TECNIS "The successful inaugural implantation of the two new intraocular lenses, Eyhance and TECNIS Synergy, in Boao, Hainan, China, marks a significant step forward for the upcoming real-world data study," stated Dr. Xiaoyu Song, Global Head of R&D at Johnson & Johnson Vision. "Both intraocular lenses are built upon the solid foundation of the Johnson & Johnson Vision TECNIS IOL family, and will provide patients with enhanced contrast sensitivity, reduced optical interference, and address specific unmet visual needs. TECNIS Eyhance and TECNIS Since its global launch, Synergy has been widely recognized and highly praised by ophthalmology professionals. We look forward to these two innovative technologies becoming available to and benefiting the vast number of cataract patients in China at the earliest opportunity.”

Cataract is the leading cause of blindness worldwide, and surgery remains the only scientifically validated treatment for the condition. With continuous advancements in science and technology, cataract surgery has transitioned from the era of vision-restorative surgery to the era of refractive surgery. Consequently, an increasing number of patients expect not only to regain vision postoperatively, but to see clearly and achieve high-quality visual outcomes. This places increasingly stringent demands on surgical precision and intraocular lens (IOL) technology.
According to Professor Chen Wei, lead surgeon of the inaugural procedure, Vice President of the Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, and Director of the Ophthalmology Center at Boao Super Hospital: “Today’s surgery proceeded very smoothly, utilizing the globally advanced new-generation enhanced continuous range-of-vision intraocular lens series. Specifically, the Synergy lens incorporates the patented Echelette diffractive grating technology for EDOF continuous-vision IOLs along with multifocal IOL technology. It can provide high-quality, complete continuous visual acuity of 0.8 or better across a range from 33 cm to distance for patients undergoing cataract surgery or presbyopia correction. While simulating the natural eye, it enhances image contrast sensitivity and improves visual quality under low-light conditions. Meanwhile, the Eyhance lens adopts a diffractive-ring-free design. While delivering enhanced intermediate vision, it does not increase the incidence of optical interference, thereby meeting the daily visual requirements of most patients.”

“This marks another significant milestone in the accelerated advancement of the ‘Johnson & Johnson Boao Innovation Chain’ strategy, following the regulatory approval of Johnson & Johnson Vision’s ‘Catalys’ femtosecond laser ophthalmic treatment system through the Boao Real-World Data study,” said Wang Liping, Vice President of Johnson & Johnson Vision for Greater China, Australia and New Zealand. “As a global leader in the eye health industry, Johnson & Johnson Vision remains committed to bringing cutting-edge technologies and innovative products to China, improving people’s eye health, and upholding Johnson & Johnson’s Credo commitment.”
Johnson & Johnson is one of the earliest multinational healthcare companies to partner with the Boao Lecheng Pilot Zone, introducing internationally cutting-edge innovative products to the region. In December 2019, it officially launched the "Johnson & Johnson Boao Innovation Chain," dedicated to establishing an innovative comprehensive platform within the Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone that integrates the exhibition of medical research achievements, technology promotion, product application, academic exchange, and training of high-caliber specialized talents.
“In response, Gu Gang, Director of the Hainan Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone Administration, stated: “Lecheng possesses unique policy advantages, while Johnson & Johnson boasts robust R&D capabilities and a comprehensive product pipeline. The collaboration between both parties is expected to accelerate the introduction and commercialization of innovative achievements, including overseas medical devices and products. The Lecheng Pilot Zone will continue to welcome partnerships with leading global healthcare enterprises to build an open hub for medical and healthcare services, introduce more advanced pharmaceuticals and medical devices, and serve more patients.””
