On November 2, Pfizer announced its Q3 2021 financial report, with quarterly revenue reaching $24.094 billion, up 134% year-on-year. Revenue for the first three quarters totaled $57.653 billion, up 91% year-over-year. Consequently, Pfizer raised its full-year revenue guidance to $81–82 billion.
Pfizer's mRNA COVID-19 vaccine Comirnaty (BNT162b2) generated $12.977 billion in revenue in Q3 2021 alone, with sales revenue for the first three quarters reaching $24.277 billion. The full-year revenue forecast has been raised from $33.5 billion to $36.0 billion.
The rapid surge in Comirnaty sales revenue during the third quarter was driven by the expansion of the eligible vaccination population, primarily due to the FDA granting Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for a third booster dose on August 13, followed by the FDA's full approval of Comirnaty on August 24, making it the first mRNA COVID-19 vaccine to receive formal regulatory approval. Additionally, on September 23, the FDA approved the expansion of the Comirnaty booster's eligible population to include individuals aged 65 and older and high-risk populations.
On September 20, Pfizer and BioNTech also announced the Phase II/III clinical trial results of Comirnaty in children aged 5 to 11 years, demonstrating a favorable safety profile and a robust neutralizing antibody response. Comirnaty has been granted Emergency Use Authorization by the FDA for children aged 5 to 11 years.
Pfizer expects Comirnaty's production capacity to expand to 4 billion doses in 2022, with full-year revenue projected to reach $29 billion.
