Moderna and Metagenomi Announce Strategic Collaboration to Advance Next-Generation In Vivo Gene Editing Therapies

On November 2, 2021, Moderna announced a strategic R&D collaboration with Metagenomi, focused on advancing the therapeutic application of novel gene editing systems in humans. The collaboration will combine Metagenomi's novel CRISPR gene editing tools with Moderna's advanced mRNA platform and lipid nanoparticle (LNP) delivery technology to develop curative therapies for patients with severe genetic diseases.

The fundamental strategy of Metagenomi’s gene editing discovery and development system begins with large-scale metagenomic data, leveraging advanced AI-powered cloud computing to discover naturally occurring nucleases from nature, which are subsequently engineered into gene editing therapies. Metagenomi has tested hundreds of novel gene editing tools and validated their utility in human therapeutics.

Under the terms of the collaboration, Metagenomi and Moderna will advance a series of in vivo gene editing therapeutics targeting undisclosed targets. Metagenomi will leverage its extensive toolbox of gene editing systems, combined with Moderna's advanced mRNA and LNP technologies, to develop next-generation therapies for genetic diseases. Additionally, Metagenomi will receive an upfront cash payment and will be eligible for future development, regulatory, and commercial milestone payments, along with tiered royalties on net product sales.
