Medical Device Manufacturer
SHANGHAI, Nov. 5, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the fourth China International Import Expo (hereinafter referred to as "CIIE") officially opened. Global medical technology leader Boston Scientific (NYSE: BSX) is participating for the third time under the theme "New Models, New Ecosystems, Building a Health Community," sharing cutting-edge global innovative technologies with Chinese doctors and patients, and showcasing the public-benefiting achievements from previous CIIEs that have accelerated the transformation of "exhibits into commercial products."
As a "long-time friend" of the CIIE, Boston Scientific returns with an expanded 400-square-meter booth in the Medical Devices and Healthcare Products section at Hall 8.1 of the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai), showcasing innovative solutions spanning six key areas: vascular health, atrial fibrillation treatment and stroke prevention, heart failure management and sudden cardiac death prevention, urology and pelvic health, single-use endoscopy, and oncology interventions. Multiple products making their CIIE "debut", pre-market release products, and cutting-edge innovations that have won or been nominated for the Galen Prize—hailed as the "Nobel Prize of the pharmaceutical industry"—will shine together on the CIIE stage. Leveraging digital and immersive interactive experiences, the booth showcases the prowess of a global leader in minimally invasive interventional innovation.
Ms. Zhang Jun, President of Greater China at Boston Scientific, stated: “This year marks the inaugural year of the ‘14th Five-Year Plan’ and a brand-new starting point for China’s development in the new century. In his speech at the opening ceremony of the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in this critical year, the General Secretary specifically emphasized the ‘three firm resolves’ and ‘four unswerving commitments’ to jointly build an open world economy. Guided by such resolve, high-level opening up will undoubtedly inject greater vitality and vigor into China’s future development. This has further bolstered the confidence of foreign enterprises in their long-term development in the Chinese market, and strengthened our determination to deepen our presence in China.”
Leveraging CIIE Momentum to Accelerate the "Exhibits-to-Products" Transformation
The China International Import Expo (CIIE) serves not only as a window for showcasing new products and technologies, but also as a platform for connecting multiple stakeholders and accelerating collaboration. Benefiting from the CIIE’s “multiplier” exposure effect and “acceleration” boosting effect, Boston Scientific has achieved a “dual success” in recent years by deepening local cooperation and accelerating the introduction of innovative products.
Making its debut at the CIIE in 2019, Boston Scientific forged a partnership with the Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone, subsequently launching a series of in-depth collaborations such as "pilot trials" and "real-world data research." These initiatives have helped alleviate patients' suffering and facilitated the practical application of innovative review and approval models. In 2020, just one month after the *Rezūm thermal therapy ablation system for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) made its debut at the 3rd CIIE, it successfully completed its first surgery in China at Lecheng. To date, the product has treated 55 patients and will make its pre-market launch at this year's CIIE.
In March this year, Boston Scientific signed an agreement with a local strategic partner to transfer the technology of its "hit" product from its inaugural exhibition -- the *TheraSphere Y90 glass microspheres for internal radiotherapy of liver cancer -- to Chengdu Neusoft Medical Technology Co., Ltd., marking the first step toward localized production of "CIIE-same" products and ushering in a significant milestone for Boston Scientific's deepened strategic layout in western China.
Deepening Local Innovation, Fostering a Health Community for High-Quality Development
Leveraging the CIIE platform to accelerate the transformation of "exhibits into products" is a microcosm of Boston Scientific's steadfast commitment to deeply cultivating the Chinese market. With over two decades of presence in China, while actively exploring a localized development path, the company has also spared no effort to empower the healthy development of the local healthcare ecosystem through professional education and training, grassroots public welfare initiatives, and other activities, working collaboratively to build a health community dedicated to high-quality development.
To enhance the accessibility of high-quality medical resources, Boston Scientific has launched a Western Development Strategy, establishing its “Second Headquarters” in Chengdu alongside a western logistics center, an innovation center, and a production and R&D center. These initiatives aim to support the western region in building a modern pharmaceutical and healthcare industry hub, extend internationally advanced medical services to grassroots patients, and, through sustained public welfare outreach programs featuring free clinics by renowned physicians, academic lectures, and hands-on surgical training, assist underserved areas in strengthening their healthcare delivery capacity.
To help bridge the "last mile" in grassroots physician training, Boston Scientific has launched the industry's first mobile education and training bus. Through interactive training and 5G remote live streaming, it has delivered cutting-edge medical technologies to dozens of grassroots areas. At this year's China International Import Expo (CIIE), the Boston Scientific mobile education and training bus is "driven" to the CIIE exhibition booth for the first time, showcasing the proven outcomes of its initiatives to empower local talent development through innovative professional education and enhance grassroots healthcare service capabilities.
At the outset of the "14th Five-Year Plan", Boston Scientific's development in China has entered a new stage. The company will continue to implement its localization strategy, leverage the spillover effects of the CIIE, accelerate the introduction of innovative technologies and products, and deepen local cooperation. It is committed to delivering more minimally invasive interventional solutions that improve the quality of life for Chinese patients and healthcare providers, collaborating with partners across all sectors to drive the upgrading of China's medical industry, promoting the nationwide sharing of high-quality medical resources, and contributing to the "Healthy China" initiative.
