Drug Introduction Provides a Novel Glucose-Lowering Option

Sanofi is one of the first companies in the world to manufacture insulin and has achieved multiple major breakthroughs in insulin research and development. Meanwhile, while continuing to provide high-quality medicines, Sanofi is continuously accelerating the introduction of innovative insulins to meet the unmet clinical needs of diabetic patients in China.

Last year, Sanofi's innovative ultra-long-acting basal insulin Toujeo®(Insulin glargine U300) was officially launched in China for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus requiring insulin therapy. Compared with similar insulin therapies, Toujeo®Reduces glycemic variability, lowers the risk of hypoglycemia, enables more stable and effective attainment of glycemic targets, and provides a more reassuring injectable therapy experience.

Professor Peng Yongde of the First People's Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University pointed out that: “Hypoglycemia, as the most common adverse reaction in insulin therapy, not only affects insulin dose titration but also increases the rate of treatment discontinuation, hindering patients from achieving glycemic targets. Toujeo®The unique sustained-release mechanism, superior glucose-lowering efficacy, and dosing flexibility can meet the needs of diverse patients, enhance safety and adherence, and further improve the rate of achieving glycemic control targets.”

This September, with Toujeo®On the First Anniversary of Approval, Sanofi's Fixed-Ratio Combination of Basal Insulin and GLP-1RA, SOLIQUA®The New Drug Application (NDA) for (iGlarLixi) has been officially accepted by the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA). The Phase III clinical trial conducted by Sanofi in China has also been officially announced simultaneously, confirmedEfficacy and safety of iGlarLixi. Study results demonstrated that, compared with the basal insulin treatment group, patients receiving iGlarLixi achieved the predefined primary efficacy endpoint in reducing glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). At 30 weeks of treatment, the mean HbA1c in the iGlarLixi group reached 6.7%, compared with 7.4% in the basal insulin group. The iGlarLixi group demonstrated superior postprandial glucose and body weight control compared with basal insulin, with a hypoglycemia incidence similar to that of the basal insulin group.

Prof. Dajin Zou, Tenth People's Hospital, Tongji Universitystated: "We are delighted to see that the clinical trial data fully confirm the efficacy and safety of iGlarLixi. Specifically, at week 30, the proportion of patients achieving the HbA1c target (HbA1c < 7%) in the iGlarLixi treatment group was 63%, compared with 30% in the basal insulin group. Additionally, iGlarLixi requires only once-daily administration and is associated with a low risk of hypoglycemia and weight gain. We greatly look forward to the market launch of this new drug, which will provide a novel glucose-lowering option for diabetic patients across China."

Digital Innovation Builds a Chronic Disease Management Ecosystem

China has a large diabetic population, with approximately 129.8 million patients.[1],ranking first globally. Currently, diabetes treatment in China faces numerous challenges, such as a low treatment target attainment rate, inadequate patient education, and severe challenges in complication prevention and control, all of which urgently need to be addressed. Sanofi is committed to integrating innovative medicines and comprehensive solutions that combine diagnosis and treatment, services, and data analytics into China's diabetes prevention and control initiatives, leading the wave of innovation in diabetes management.

As early as 2014, Sanofi launched the "TRIO" project to explore the application of digital technologies in empowering diabetes management. By connecting physicians, nurses, and patients, the initiative employs a data-driven and AI-powered management model to deliver phased, stratified, and round-the-clock personalized interventions, helping patients achieve optimal therapeutic outcomes. Over the past eight years, the project has expanded to more than 550 hospitals across China, cumulatively serving over 700,000 patients with diabetes.

Prof. Yaoming Xue, Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical Universitystated: "The process of diabetes management is complex and prolonged, encompassing everything from screening and in-hospital diagnosis to the out-of-hospital implementation of treatment plans. The 'Smart Care Trio' project extends in-hospital treatment to out-of-hospital settings, enabling the healthcare team to provide continuous monitoring and care for diabetic patients throughout the entire journey. By promptly adjusting treatment regimens according to individual patient conditions, it improves target attainment rates and patient adherence, thereby achieving optimal glycemic management and ultimately enhancing patients' quality of life."

Ms. Qiu Youping, General Manager, Diabetes Business Unit, Sanofi Chinastated: “The digital diabetes management model has proven highly effective in helping more patients with diabetes achieve their treatment targets, while simultaneously enabling Sanofi to accumulate extensive chronic disease management expertise. Moving forward, Sanofi will continue to lead in the diabetes sector by accelerating the introduction of innovative products into China, steadfastly advancing digital transformation, and actively exploring innovative, internet-based chronic disease management solutions. Our goal is to bring healthy living to a broad population of diabetes patients across China, ultimately realizing our vision of reversing the growing prevalence of chronic diseases by 2030.”
