Atrial fibrillation is a highly prevalent chronic disease with severe clinical consequences, imposing a heavy disease burden, and currently affects 10 million patients in China.[1], this figure continues to rise steadily. Despite continuous advancements in clinical technology, the diagnosis and treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF) still face numerous challenges, including non-standardized rhythm control therapy, significant adverse reactions to existing medications, high recurrence rates, and the absence of a fully integrated closed-loop management system across the entire disease course.
Prof. Ma Changsheng, Director of the Cardiology Center at Beijing Anzhen Hospital, and Prof. Wu Shulin, Vice President of Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, stated: “Atrial fibrillation (AFib) often presents with subtle symptoms, and the public lacks sufficient awareness of the condition. This has resulted in a relatively low diagnosis rate for AFib in China compared to other cardiovascular diseases. Although numerous treatment options for AFib are available, the utilization rate of key symptom-alleviating strategies, such as rhythm control, remains suboptimal, indicating significant room for improvement in treatment standardization. AFib is also highly prone to recurrence. Many patients fail to adhere to regular follow-up visits, leading to poor prognosis; disease recurrence may even trigger severe cardiovascular events such as stroke. Furthermore, AFib patients require long-term medication, making medication adherence and drug safety pressing issues that urgently need to be addressed.”
To address current pain points in the diagnosis and treatment of atrial fibrillation (AFib), Sanofi has launched the "Mai Dong Xin Sheng" whole-course management program for AFib patients, encompassing support across all stages of diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, and payment. "Sanofi is not only focused on introducing innovative medicines to bring more and superior treatment options to patients, but also aspires to be a comprehensive 'guardian' for patients."Liu Jing, General Manager, Innovation & Core Brands Business Unit, Sanofistated, "As a leader in the chronic disease sector, Sanofi is accelerating its digital transformation and is committed to providing innovative solutions to address the challenges of chronic disease management. We are delighted to partner with MediTrust Health. Together, we will jointly develop an innovative payment program specifically designed for atrial fibrillation (AFib) patients, taking the first step toward enhancing the full-course disease management ecosystem to help AFib patients better manage their condition."
As a vital component of the full-course management program for patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib), the “Mai Dong Xin Sheng” initiative leverages Sanofi’s century-long global resources in China’s cardiovascular sector while deeply integrating MediTrust Health’s closed-loop ecosystem model of “Internet + Healthcare + Pharmaceuticals + Insurance.” By bridging critical follow-up and payment processes, it establishes a seamless full-course management loop for AFib patients. As the first innovative group insurance project in the antiarrhythmic field, and pursuant to the letter of intent, both parties will jointly establish a one-stop service platform for AFib patients. This platform aims to deliver disease education, clinic visit and medication reminders, exclusive benefits for enrolled participants, and structured patient follow-up services, thereby enhancing medication adherence, improving quality of life, and optimizing long-term clinical outcomes. Notably, Sanofi’s landmark innovative AFib therapy, dronedarone hydrochloride tablets (trade name: Multaq®)is expected to receive marketing approval in China by the end of this year, at which time the "MaiDongXinSheng" project will also be launched concurrently.
Feng Hao, General Manager, Innovative Payment & Patient Services Division, MediTrust Healthstated: "MediTrust Health has consistently been dedicated to actively exploring diversified and innovative payment solutions, and to building a multi-tiered coverage system in the pharmaceutical payment sector. The commercial insurance program developed in collaboration with Sanofi will further address the medication needs of a broader population of atrial fibrillation patients, ensuring they achieve greater clinical benefits and reliable medication coverage. We will fully leverage our platform advantages to continuously optimize and enhance patient follow-up management, and work hand in hand with Sanofi to maximize the effectiveness of the comprehensive disease management program for atrial fibrillation patients."
Over the past 40 years, Sanofi has been rooted in China, serving China, and consistently focused on addressing the unmet cardiovascular needs of patients in China. Looking ahead, building on its existing footprint, Sanofi will continue to accelerate the introduction of therapies, including Multaq®innovative drugs introduced to China, and accelerating the exploration of full-course management for cardiovascular diseases with industry partners to build an ecosystem. By advancing standardized treatment and comprehensive management, Sanofi is committed to enabling more patients to lead normal lives and contributing to the strategic goals of "Healthy China 2030".
