SUZHOU, May 28, 2026 — The Center for Drug Evaluation (CDE) of China's National Medical Products Administration has accepted the clinical trial application for a recombinant multicomponent Meningococcal serogroup B (MenB) vaccine independently developed by Suzhou Juwei Biotech. Classified as a Category 1.2 preventive biological product, the differentiated innovative vaccine is set to fill the long-standing gap in China's Meningococcal serogroup B prevention and improve the country's comprehensive meningococcal immunization system.

Meningococcal meningitis is a severe acute respiratory infectious disease characterized by sudden onset, rapid progression, and high fatality and disability rates. Clinical data show that untreated patients face a mortality rate of over 50%, and 10% to 20% of survivors suffer permanent sequelae including neurological damage and hearing loss, posing a serious threat to the health of children and adolescents worldwide.
The global epidemiological pattern of meningitis has undergone a structural shift. Cases of previously prevalent Group A and Group C meningococci have continued to decline, while Meningococcal serogroup B (MenB) has become the dominant pathogenic serogroup in developed countries in Europe and America, bringing rising public health prevention pressures.
According to April 2026 surveillance data from the French Public Health Agency, France recorded 628 invasive meningococcal cases in 2025, with MenB infections accounting for 46% of the total, ranking first among all serogroups. UK epidemiological statistics for 2024–2025 show that MenB meningitis accounted for 82.8% of all cases, mainly affecting people under 25 years old. In March 2026, a clustered MenB outbreak broke out in southeast England, causing more than 30 confirmed cases and two deaths. The transmission mainly occurred on campuses and in closed social spaces, drawing widespread attention from the global public health community.
While China has achieved remarkable results in meningitis prevention and control, the shifting bacterial spectrum has drastically changed the domestic epidemic pattern, making MenB meningitis the biggest weakness in current prevention systems.
Official 2025 monitoring data released by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention shows that the proportion of domestic MenB meningitis cases surged from 14.55% in 2016 to 67.29% in 2023, establishing MenB as the primary pathogenic serogroup in China. Domestic meningitis incidence has risen year on year: the number of reported cases in 2025 increased by 41% compared with 2024 and 93% compared with 2023, with MenB, Y and W strains driving the most significant growth.
China has widely deployed vaccines against Group A, A+C and ACYW135 meningococci to curb common serogroup infections. However, no MenB vaccine has been approved for domestic marketing, leaving high-risk groups unprotected for a long time. Juwei Biotech’s new vaccine precisely targets this unmet public health demand. Adopting a multi-antigen combination design, it covers mainstream domestic MenB strains and is expected to provide all-round, targeted meningitis protection for people of all age groups.
As a Category 1.2 innovative preventive biological product with a brand-new antigen combination, the vaccine is a first-class improved innovative product in China. Different from conventional generic and iteratively upgraded vaccines, it delivers core technological innovations compared with traditional meningococcal polysaccharide vaccines. It boasts three major strengths: superior safety, stronger immunogenicity and broader strain coverage. Adopting genetic engineering recombination technology for antigen purification without complete bacterial cells, it avoids heterologous protein residues and adverse reactions of traditional vaccines with higher safety controllability. It can induce high-titer bactericidal antibodies for strong and long-lasting immune protection, and solves the industry challenge of MenB's high antigen diversity and variability to adapt to domestic epidemic strain characteristics.
The global MenB vaccine market has long been monopolized by overseas pharmaceutical enterprises, with only three products approved worldwide. Chinese biomedical companies have accelerated their layout in this track, adopting diverse technical routes to catch up and form a competitive landscape of parallel innovative R&D of multiple domestic pipeline products.

As a domestic biomedical enterprise focusing on innovative preventive vaccines for major infectious diseases, Suzhou Juwei Biotech relies on its self-built innovative technology platform to develop high-value, highly accessible domestic vaccines. The clinical trial acceptance of its MenB vaccine marks a key breakthrough in its bacterial vaccine business. With the continuous upgrading of China's biomedical innovation capacity, domestic vaccine enterprises are breaking overseas market monopolies, filling public health prevention gaps through differentiated innovation, and promoting the localization and high-end upgrading of China's vaccine industry.
Industry analysts believe that the launch of the domestic MenB vaccine will fill the final gap in China's meningitis prevention system, realizing full coverage of mainstream pathogenic serogroups including A, B, C, W and Y, and effectively reducing domestic meningitis morbidity and mortality.
Currently, imported MenB vaccines are priced at more than 1,000 RMB per dose, and a full vaccination course of three to four doses imposes high costs on the public, greatly hindering universal vaccination. The China-developed innovative vaccine will lower vaccination thresholds with superior cost performance, significantly improve the accessibility of public health prevention services, and benefit children and adolescents across the country.
Juwei Biotech has not yet disclosed the detailed clinical trial plan and R&D progress timeline of the vaccine. The industry will continue to follow up on its clinical research and trial progress, looking forward to the official launch of this domestic innovative vaccine to further consolidate China's national meningitis prevention and control barrier.
