Bayer Discontinues Phase II Development of P2X3 Antagonist Eliapixant as Merck’s Lyfnua (Gefapixant) Gains Approval in Japan

News on February 18, 2022 /BioValleyBIOON/ --BayerBayer recently announced the termination of the Phase 2 clinical development program for eliapixant (BAY1817080).

Eliapixant is an orally potent and selective P2X3 receptor antagonist.，P2X3 receptor is a key regulator of afferent nerve fiber signal transmission and is therefore considered to play a central role in neurohyperesthesia diseases. P2X3 receptor antagonists block the receptor to reduce the sensitivity of peripheral nerve fibers.

Eliapixant is being developed for the treatment of endometrial cancer, refractory chronic cough, and overactive bladder.DiabetesPotential indications in neuropathic pain.

After reviewing the existing data, Bayer concluded that the overall benefit of eliapixant in these indications no longer outweighs the risks.

Eliapixant originates from the strategic alliance between Bayer and Evotec SE. Bayer will continue to collaborate with Evotec SE on other R&D projects. Bayer remains fully committed to researching and developing new therapeutic solutions to address significant unmet medical needs.

The active pharmaceutical ingredient in Lyfnua is gefapixant, an oral, non-narcotic, selective P2X3 receptor antagonist. RCC refers to cough that persists despite appropriate treatment of the underlying condition, and UCC refers to cough for which no underlying cause can be identified despite comprehensive evaluation. For dosage, the Lyfnua 45mg tablet is taken twice daily.
