On May 31, Takeda announced that, starting from August 1, 2022, the company will return the commercial rights of Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine Spikevax (mRNA-1273) in Japan to Moderna.

Moderna’s COVID-19 Vaccine Spikevax Receives Special Use Authorization from Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare for the Prevention of COVID-19 Caused by SARS-CoV-2.

In addition, Takeda also holds the rights to Novavax's COVID-19 vaccine NVX-CoV2373 in Japan. This recombinant protein COVID-19 vaccine has also been approved for marketing in Japan, for primary and booster immunization in individuals aged 18 years and above.
