On June 24, according to foreign media reports, Illumina has acquired IDbyDNA, a company providing precise pathogen diagnosis based on metagenomic technology. Following the acquisition of Grail to enter the early cancer screening market, this marks another move downstream into the pathogen diagnostics sector.

The origin of the two companies can be traced back to two years ago, when they attempted to integrate Illumina's library preparation reagents and sequencers with IDbyDNA's analysis platform.Explify is integrated to jointly develop RUO solutions.

IDbyDNA currently has three main products:

1. Respiratory Pathogen Identification Panel (RPIP):Utilizing precise RNA and DNA sequencing, RPIP enrichment probes, and automated Explify RPIP data analysis, it provides sensitive detection and quantification of over 280 respiratory pathogens causing pneumonia, as well as antimicrobial resistance (AMR) information for 60 antibiotics and antiviral drugs. RPIP can identify more than 180 types of bacteria, including 13 mycobacteria and other slow-growing pathogens, over 50 fungi, and more than 40 viruses, including whole-genome characterization of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A/B viruses, along with antibiotic and antiviral resistance markers based on over 2,000 genomic signatures.

2. Panel for urinary pathogens (UPIP):Bringing the power of precision metagenomics to urogenital pathogen detection, providing detection and quantification of more than 170 common, less common, difficult-to-culture, and often overlooked urinary pathogens; many of which can lead to recurrent or hard-to-manage urinary tract infections. Resistance information was determined for >120 bacteria, 35 viruses, 14 fungi, 4 parasites, and >3,500 resistance markers across 46 antibiotics.

3. Panel for transplant pathogens (AlloID):AlloID, provided by CareDx and supported by IDbyDNA's Explify platform, is a plasma-based precision metagenomics test that detects and quantifies viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites that are particularly prone to causing infections in transplant patients. AlloID will also provide genotyping information for transplant-related viruses, antiviral resistance analysis, and multidrug-resistant bacteria detection.

IDbyDNA completed a $9 million Series A financing round in 2016, led by Artis Ventures, a venture capital firm based in San Francisco; and completed a $20 million Series B financing round in 2020, led by Artis Ventures, with Genesys Capital and other investors following up.

Notably, Artis Ventures is the investment firm behind Freenome, a rising star in early cancer screening. In January 2022, Freenome secured nearly $300 million in strategic investment from Roche, primarily focusing on the development of early screening products for colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, and multiple cancers.

Artis VenturesOther medical investment cases include Stemcentrx, a developer of cancer stem cell-targeted therapies for solid tumors; Eko, a non-invasive cardiovascular diagnostics company; Cerebral, a telemedicine company; Outpace, which develops curative cell therapies based on protein reconstruction; and a company developing therapies for viral infectious diseases based on CRISPR technology.ExcisionAnd other companies.
