【Pharmaceutical Network Industry DynamicsRecently, it is the intensive disclosure period for the 2022 half-year financial reports and earnings forecasts of pharmaceutical companies both in China and abroad. Up to now, the performance of local pharmaceutical companies has been released one after another, and most multinational pharmaceutical companies have also announced their financial data for the first half of the year. Overall, the results are mixed.
From the publicly available data, in the first half of this year, a number of multinational pharmaceutical companies maintained growth in performance, including Pfizer, Merck, BMS, Sanofi, Roche, etc.
Pfizer's 2022 half-year performance report shows that the company achieved a total revenue of $53.4 billion, a year-on-year increase of 60%; net profit was $17.769 billion, a year-on-year increase of 70%. In terms of performance contribution, the mRNA vaccine Comirnaty, co-developed by the company and BioNTech, generated sales revenue as high as $22.075 billion.
Merck's financial report for the first half of 2022 shows that the company achieved a total revenue of $30.494 billion, representing a year-on-year increase of 41% excluding the impact of exchange rate fluctuations. Among this, Molnupiravir achieved sales of $4.4 billion in the first half of the year. According to the company’s previous forecast, the sales of Molnupiravir in 2022 are expected to reach between $5 billion and $6 billion, with global sales projected to be between $56.1 billion and $57.6 billion.
BMS's Financial Report for the First Half of the Year Shows a Total Revenue of $23.535 Billion. In Q2, Revenue Reached $11.9 Billion, a 2% Increase Year-over-Year. After Adjusting for Foreign Exchange Impact, Q2 Revenue Grew by 5%. During the Reporting Period, Established Products Such as Eliquis (Apixaban), Opdivo (Nivolumab), and Yervoy (Ipilimumab) Maintained High Single-Digit to Double-Digit Growth, with H1 Total Revenue Reaching $16.95 Billion. Additionally, Newly Launched Innovative Products Are Also Gaining Market Share, with Abecma and Reblozyl Delivering Strong Performances.
Sanofi's financial report for the first half of 2022 shows that the company achieved a total revenue of 19.79 billion euros, a year-on-year increase of 14.2%. Among them, the blockbuster product Dupixent achieved rapid growth in the first half of 2022, generating revenue of 3.577 billion euros, a year-on-year increase of 44.4%. Notably, the growth rate of Sanofi's China region in the first half of the year has reached 12.3%, almost on par with the 12.4% growth rate in the United States. The China region contributed a cumulative revenue of 1.699 billion euros, while the United States region contributed 7.562 billion euros.
Roche Achieves Revenue of CHF 32.295 Billion in the First Half of 2022, Up 5% Year-on-Year; Pharmaceutical Division Revenue Reaches CHF 22.347 Billion, Up 3%, and Diagnostics Business Revenue Hits CHF 9.948 Billion, Up 10%. However, in the Chinese Market, Roche’s Performance Was Less Impressive. The Company Stated That Due to the Impact of Biosimilars and COVID-19 Prevention and Control Measures, Group Sales in China Declined by 7%.
However, some multinational pharmaceutical companies are "worried" about their performance, such as Novartis and Johnson & Johnson.
Novartis' financial report for the first half of 2022 shows that the company's net sales revenue reached 25.312 billion US dollars in the first half of the year, basically flat compared with the previous year; the net profit was 3.916 billion US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 20.97%; the operating income was 25.899 billion US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 0.34%.
Johnson & Johnson's financial report for the first half of 2022 shows that the company's total global revenue was $47.446 billion, a year-on-year increase of 4%, and its net profit was $9.963 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 20.1%. It is reported that due to the continuous decline of the global market impacted by biosimilars, the sales of several Johnson & Johnson products, including Remicade (infliximab) and Imbruvica (ibrutinib), have declined. Among them, the sales of Remicade in the first half of the year even fell by more than 20%.
In summary, in the first half of this year, multinational pharmaceutical companies that maintained high-speed growth in performance mostly benefited from vaccines and product-driven growth, while those with declining performance were mostly impacted by biosimilars. However, there were also cases like Novartis, whose performance declined despite product growth in the first half of the year. How multinational pharmaceutical companies will respond to the challenges of biosimilars and product competition in the future remains to be seen.
