Boston Scientific AXIOS Electrocautery Enabled Stent System Ranks on the 14th Healthy China "Top Ten Medical Devices" List
The Health China Forum is one of the earliest and most authoritative conferences in China’s medical and health industry with the theme of "Healthy China," and it is a national forum participated by health management institutions, the healthcare industry, and the media. The "Top Ten Medical Devices" list was formulated and released by the 14th Health China Forum after comprehensively reviewing domestically launched medical devices based on criteria such as innovation, breakthroughs, and influence.
In this regard, Ms. Zhang Jun, President of Boston Scientific Greater China, stated: "AXIOS has been nominated for the U.S. ‘Prix Galien Award - Best Medical Technology’ for three consecutive years. Its appearance on the significant list at the Health China Forum signifies that the innovative and patient-benefiting value brought by AXIOS has gained high recognition in China. This is another inspiring highlight as Boston Scientific celebrates the 25th anniversary of its entry into China. Looking ahead to the future journey of 'Innovating for Life,' Boston Scientific's commitment to supporting the Healthy China strategy will remain unchanged. We will continue to share cutting-edge global innovations with Chinese healthcare professionals and patients, promoting the enhancement of medical standards in China."
Endoscopic Minimally Invasive Drainage Becomes the Preferred Solution for Pancreatic Fluid Collections
Acute pancreatitis is a common emergency condition of the digestive system that requires hospitalization, often caused by gallstones and excessive alcohol consumption. In recent years, with the improvement of living standards and changes in dietary structure in China, the incidence of hypertriglyceridemia-induced acute pancreatitis has significantly increased, showing a trend towards younger patients and more severe cases.[1]Peripancreatic fluid collections (including pancreatic pseudocysts and walled-off necrosis), as common complications in patients with acute pancreatitis, not only have high incidence and potential mortality rates but also impose a heavy burden on both hospitals and patients due to the complexity of clinical treatment.
For the treatment of this condition, traditional surgical drainage requires open abdominal surgery, which is rarely used clinically due to significant trauma, higher complication rates, and mortality. In recent years, with advancements in equipment and technology, minimally invasive drainage procedures guided by endoscopy have provided patients with a less invasive treatment solution. These procedures also result in shorter hospital stays and lower costs post-surgery. However, in actual practice, to ensure adequate drainage, multiple plastic stents or repeated stent replacements are typically required during endoscopic drainage procedures, undoubtedly increasing technical difficulty and operational complexity. This has also led to only a few endoscopy centers in China currently having the capability to perform such surgeries.
Simplify Surgery, Improve Efficiency, Boston ScientificAXIOS Revolutionizes Treatment Again
In response to the challenges of traditional endoscopic drainage therapy, the Boston Scientific AXIOS electrocautery drainage stent (hereinafter referred to as the "AXIOS stent") provides a simpler and more efficient new treatment option for clinical practice through a series of groundbreaking designs.

Through innovation in material technology, the AXIOS stent has become globallyThe First ProductLumen-apposing metal stents (LAMS) that can be used under the guidance of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). This unique feature allows doctors to use EUS during surgery to clearly visualize anatomical sites that were previously inaccessible with traditional endoscopes, ensuring precise positioning during puncture and stent deployment, thereby minimizing the risk of potential intraoperative complications. The introduction of the AXIOS stent has also marked the transition of endoscopic ultrasound applications from the diagnostic era into the therapeutic era.
Through innovative mechanical design, the AXIOS stent, with its integrated stent release system, allows doctors to complete surgeries using a single instrument without the need to add or replace stents, completely eliminating the complex instrument exchange process during procedures. Additionally, the electrosurgical ceramic tip at the front of the stent delivery system can enter the cyst cavity, enabling the stent to reach the target structure quickly and smoothly, eliminating the previous step of using a cystotomy knife to penetrate the stomach wall. After positioning the target site, the doctor can precisely deploy the stent by operating the handle.
Due to its precise positioning and easy operation, doctors usually need only 5 minutes from insertion to stent deployment, greatly improving the efficiency of the surgery. Moreover, as the AXIOS stent requires less demanding skills from doctors, it can be performed in most endoscopy centers in China. With the promotion of this advanced treatment solution in the future, more patients will benefit.
