GuangzhouAugust 20, 2022PR Newswire -- On August 19, 2022, the Phase II launch of the "New Breath" China Asthma Patient Online Registry System Construction Project (hereinafter referred to as the "Project") was successfully held at the Guangzhou Baiyun International Conference Center. The project is led by the National Center for Respiratory Medicine, the State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Diseases, and the Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health, with support from GSK China. A total of 111 institutions across China are participating in the project. The initiative aims to investigate risk factors, clinical characteristics, and the current status of diagnosis and treatment among asthma patients in China, providing a reference for improving standardized asthma diagnosis and treatment practices in the country. Professor Lai Kefang, Director of the Clinical Trials Department at the Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health—State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Diseases, presided over the meeting, which was attended by more than 400 experts nationwide both online and offline. Academician Zhong Nanshan, Director of the National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Diseases, Ms. Qi Xin, Vice President of GSK and General Manager of GSK China, and Dr. Pauline Ng, Vice President of GSK and Medical Director of GSK's Prescription Drug Division in China, delivered speeches during the opening ceremony.
Academician Zhong Nanshan stated: "With the deepening understanding of asthma, the diagnosis and treatment model for asthma is also continuously improving. By establishing a national asthma patient registration platform based on standardized asthma medical records, as well as collecting data on asthma as a single disease and sharing databases, we are actively promoting the formulation of standardized clinical diagnosis and treatment protocols for asthma, thereby enhancing the level of diagnosis, treatment, and research in China. At the same time, we hope that through the implementation of Phase II research, we can summarize the current status of diagnosis and treatment for Chinese asthma patients, identify patterns in the occurrence and development of asthma in China, provide new ideas for early intervention in asthma, and on this basis, promote basic and clinical translational research in the field of asthma in China. This will also provide data references for the formulation of relevant health and medical insurance policies in China, benefiting more Chinese asthma patients."

Professor Lai Kefang reviewed the main results of Phase I and introduced the work plan for Phase II: "The first phase of the project, 'New Breath, Constant Care,' was launched in December 2017, with the participation of 58 hospitals across 10 regions in China, enrolling more than 26,000 asthma patients. Phase II, 'A Whole New Breath,' will involve 111 hospitals across China and is expected to register clinical data for over 18,000 asthma patients. Utilizing mobile internet + medical technology, a collaborative network and large database for managing asthma patients in China will be established, aiming to create model areas for standardized asthma treatment and management, and improve the level of control for asthma patients in China."
