"Skillful Hands Initiative" for Enhancing Surgical Diagnosis and Treatment of Cerebral Hemorrhage Sets Sail Again
FuzhouSeptember 4, 2022PR Newswire -- As the first multinational leading enterprise to announce support for the country's "Common Prosperity" vision, Johnson & Johnson continues to innovate and empower frontline medical staff, benefiting patients in prefecture-level cities and county regions. Today, the 2022 High-Level Forum of the "Skillful Hands Initiative," a project aimed at enhancing the surgical diagnosis and treatment capabilities for cerebral hemorrhage initiated by the National Health Commission's Hospital Management Institute and supported by Johnson & Johnson Medical Technology, was successfully held in Fuzhou. This marks another step forward since the project’s launch in July 2021. The initiative establishes cerebral hemorrhage surgical diagnosis and treatment bases across China, improving the standardization, consistency, and scientific approach in cerebral hemorrhage treatment, ensuring local access to timely medical care for cerebral hemorrhage patients, and reinforcing the health foundation for common prosperity. At the event, representatives from the second batch of 131 cerebral hemorrhage surgical diagnosis and treatment bases received their accreditation plaques. It is expected that this year, the project will cover 29 provinces in China, over 100 cities, and nearly 250 hospitals, benefiting tens of thousands of cerebral hemorrhage patients.

The "Skillful Hands Initiative" for Enhancing Surgical Diagnosis and Treatment of Cerebral Hemorrhage Sets Sail Again
Meet the Local Medical Needs of Patients with Cerebral Hemorrhage, Reduce Poverty Caused by Illness, and Protect People's Health
Ye Quanfu, Director of the Hospital Management Research Institute of the National Health Commission of China"High-quality development is a hot topic in today's society. We believe that, under the guidance of a series of national policies, the implementation of the project to enhance the surgical diagnosis and treatment capabilities for cerebral hemorrhage will not only balance the level gaps among various medical institutions at all levels but also comprehensively improve China’s surgical diagnosis, treatment, and scientific research levels for cerebral hemorrhage. This will support the high-quality development of public hospitals and benefit patients with cerebral hemorrhage."
Intracerebral hemorrhage is a type of stroke, also known as "apoplexy." The number of stroke patients in China ranks first in the world, with nearly one-third being cases of intracerebral hemorrhage, over 80% of which are caused by hypertension.
"Intracerebral hemorrhage is a critical and severe condition that seriously endangers people's health, characterized by high incidence, high disability rate, and high mortality, and it is increasingly affecting younger populations. Hospitals at all levels receive patients, but there is currently a lack of homogeneous and standardized diagnostic and treatment criteria. We hope that through the 'Skillful Hands Program,' we can jointly enhance the diagnostic and treatment capabilities of intracerebral hemorrhage surgery using single disease quality management methods."Professor Kang Dezhi, Dean of the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University and Executive Chairman of the Project for Enhancing Surgical Diagnosis and Treatment Capabilities in Cerebral Hemorrhage"We are very pleased to see that since the launch of this project a year ago, it has tangibly helped the first batch of base units and surrounding areas improve their clinical skills, especially in minimally invasive surgery for cerebral hemorrhage under endoscopy. They have successfully transitioned through the learning curve, bringing blessings to patients with cerebral hemorrhage and working wonders."
Enhance the diagnostic and treatment capabilities of prefecture-level cities and counties, and accelerate the下沉of high-quality medical resources.
The "Magic Hands Program" was launched in 2021. Through the preliminary base application and expert review, the accredited bases completed online theoretical learning, offline practical training, in-hospital simulation exercises, and clinical case practice related to endoscopic intracerebral hemorrhage, and finally obtained technical certification from the project team, thereby driving surrounding hospitals to continuously carry out skills training.
Representatives from the first batch of base hospitals in 2021 shared their work achievements and thoughts at the meeting.Li Dongbo, Vice President of Ankang People's Hospital in Shaanxi Province and President of the Brain Hospital"This project has raised awareness about intracerebral hemorrhage among all parties, making it easier for our hospital and doctors to carry out their work. Moreover, it has significantly helped improve the skills of our hospital's doctors and promoted the standardization of intracerebral hemorrhage treatment capabilities across hospitals at all levels. Additionally, it has strengthened the connection between our regional hospital and larger treatment centers in China, advancing our discipline development and better safeguarding the health of people in An Kang and surrounding areas."
Building High-Level Professional Education, Innovating Medical Technology to Accelerate Empowerment
As the second batch of base hospitals completed the plaque-granting ceremony, neurosurgeons from these hospitals will undergo training combining online and offline learning, theoretical teaching, and simulation exercises. On the same day, the first group of trainees participated in a simulated training session for endoscopic intracerebral hemorrhage hematoma evacuation. Using 3D-printed cranial and hematoma models, they were able to simulate real-life scenarios of endoscopic surgery for intracerebral hemorrhage, practice surgical techniques, and quickly master them. This year, a total of thousands of neurosurgeons will participate in the training, reflecting the highly positive response to the program.

"We often say that the brain is the battlefield for neurosurgeons. Johnson & Johnson continues to innovate and make breakthroughs in the field of biosurgery, particularly in hemostasis and prevention of leakage for neurosurgery, committing to provide better products and technologies for clinical use."Senior Director of Johnson & Johnson Medical Technology's Ethicon Biosurgery Division, Chen Songxin, stated"We also engage in and support professional talent education over the long term, especially for critical and severe conditions like cerebral hemorrhage. We hope that by enhancing doctors' diagnostic and treatment skills, patients with cerebral hemorrhage can receive timely and high-quality medical services locally."
The "Skillful Hands Program," a crucial component of the strategic cooperation between Johnson & Johnson Medical and the National Health Commission's Hospital Management Research Institute, aims to enhance the surgical diagnosis and treatment capabilities for cerebral hemorrhage. In the future, both parties will continue to work together on industry policy system research, high-quality hospital development, specialized diagnosis and treatment capability improvement, and professional education. This collaboration seeks to accelerate the broad coverage of high-quality medical professional educational resources, enabling everyone to share a healthy life.
