Medical Device Development and Manufacturer
Hansoh Pharmaceutical Group Company Limited (hereinafter referred to as "Hansoh Pharma") and Belgium-based KiOmed Pharma SA (hereinafter referred to as "KiOmed") jointly announced that they have reached an exclusive licensing agreement for the development, registration, and commercialization of KiOmed's innovative product under research, KiOmedinevsOne, in mainland China, Macao, and Taiwan.
According to the terms of the agreement, Hansoh Pharma will obtain exclusive rights for the development, registration, and commercialization of KiOmedinevsOne within the authorized region for osteoarthritis-related indications. Hansoh Pharma will pay an upfront fee and potential development, registration, and sales-based commercial milestone payments of up to 66 million euros, as well as tiered double-digit royalties on future net product sales.
KiOmedinevsOne is the world's first exclusive next-generation single-dose injection for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis, utilizing non-animal KiOmedine CM-chitosan. KiOmedine CM-chitosan is a highly purified polysaccharide derived from *Agaricus bisporus* (enoki mushroom) and is based on patented Belgian technology. Unlike hyaluronic acid, the standard therapy for osteoarthritis, KiOmedinevsOne has a dual mechanism of action that alleviates osteoarthritis discomfort and other symptoms by reducing oxidative stress and enhancing joint lubrication. Clinical studies have shown that patients experience significant pain relief within two weeks after a single injection of KiOmedinevsOne, with a 66% reduction in WOMAC pain scores, and symptom relief lasting at least six months. KiOmedinevsOne has obtained CE certification and was launched in Europe in 2021.
Osteoarthritis is a common disabling disease in clinical practice, affecting approximately 250 million people worldwide, with knee osteoarthritis accounting for about 85% of osteoarthritis cases. According to epidemiological surveys, the prevalence of knee osteoarthritis in China is 8.1%, significantly higher in women than in men. As China enters an aging society, the number of osteoarthritis patients is expected to increase substantially. Currently, there remains a long-term lack of safe and effective treatments in clinical practice, and KiOmedinevsOne is expected to further address the significant unmet clinical needs in China.
Hansoh Pharma Executive Director Sun Yuan stated: "KiOmed is a leader and expert in natural chitosan products, and we are delighted to collaborate with KiOmed. Osteoarthritis severely impacts patients' quality of life and imposes a heavy disease burden on patients' families and society. We are pleased to see the tremendous potential of KiOmedinevsOne in the field of osteoarthritis treatment, offering convenient and effective clinical therapy. We look forward to this differentiated innovative product bringing more meaningful clinical benefits to patients in China."
KiOmed founder and Executive Chairman Fran?ois Blondel said, "We are very pleased to partner with Hansoh Pharma, a leading innovation-driven pharmaceutical company in China. Validated across multiple regions in Europe, KiOmedinevsOne has demonstrated outstanding long-lasting efficacy and safety advantages in the field of osteoarthritis treatment. We believe that with Hansoh Pharma's mature development and commercialization experience in Greater China, KiOmedinevsOne can soon benefit a large number of osteoarthritis patients in China."
