China Finance and Economics News, November 5th, by reporter Du Ding: At this year's CIIE, Sanofi vaccines introduced a newly EU-approved RSV "defense weapon" - Beyfortu (nirsevimab). It is the first and only RSV preventive measure that can be widely applied to infant populations. The 2022 CIIE marked its global debut.
According to reports, as an innovative preventive measure, Beyfortus was granted the "Breakthrough Therapy Designation" by the Center for Drug Evaluation of the National Medical Products Administration in January 2021. This is expected to accelerate its approval and market launch in China, supporting RSV prevention and control in China.

In respiratory diseases, there is a hidden "respiratory assassin" - Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). According to statistics, 95% of infants under the age of 2 have been infected with RSV. In the early stages of infection, it usually hides behind symptoms of the common cold and fever, but no one can predict which baby it will deliver a "fatal blow" to - RSV is a leading cause of infant hospitalization worldwide.
At the CIIE booth, Sanofi Pasteur unveiled its full-chain RSV prevention and control solution, including the world premiere of an "RSV defense tool," which spans from disease detection and awareness enhancement to innovative preventive measures. In its exhibition area, Sanofi Pasteur used interactive formats to comprehensively showcase RSV and the harm it poses to infants and young children, aiming to raise societal awareness and urgency regarding RSV recognition and prevention.
According to media reports, patient survey data shows that the average treatment cost for RSV patients ranges from 10,000 to 120,000 yuan. Further estimating based on the number of respiratory disease cases disclosed in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine in 2019, the total annual medical expenses for treating hospitalized children reach up to 3.5 billion yuan, equivalent to the cost of the national immunization program vaccines in China.
