NICE is a non-departmental public body of the UK Department of Health, primarily responsible for: National Health Service, clinical practice of health technologies, guidelines for health promotion and disease prevention, and social care services. It serves the UK NHS.

Intelligent Finance APP learned that the UK's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommended in its final guidelines that the National Health Service (NHS) promote the use of Novo Nordisk's (NVO.US) weight-loss drug Wegovy (semaglutide). Meanwhile, the UK's drug pricing watchdog has also confirmed that the drug is safe, effective, and reasonably priced.

NICE stated that once Novo Nordisk confirms the launch of the therapy in the UK, Wegovy will soon be available for obese patients in the NHS. However, Helen Knight, Director of NICE’s Drug Evaluation, said: "This drug is not suitable for long-term use by everyone. Our committee has provided specific usage recommendations to ensure its efficacy, and it has been noted that the drug can only be taken continuously for a maximum of two years."

NICE recommends that for adult patients suffering from at least one weight-related condition and with a body mass index (BMI) of at least 35 kg/m², Wegovy can be prescribed alongside a low-calorie diet and increased physical activity. According to the agency, adult patients with a BMI between 30 and 34.9 kg/m² who have one weight-related condition may also use the drug by prescription, but these patients might need referral to specialized weight management medical services.

Moreover, NICE also pointed out some uncertainties regarding the drug and stated that within specialized weight management service institutions offering multidisciplinary obesity management, Wegovy can only be prescribed for a maximum duration of two years. This recommendation is based on the clinical model provided by Novo Nordisk.
