Eisai Projects $7 Billion Global Sales for Alzheimer's Drug Leqembi by 2030

Eisai introduced at a press conference on March 10: Thanks to the widespread application of new blood testing technologies, global sales of Leqembi will experience leapfrog growth by 2025. It is estimated that by 2030, approximately 2.5 million patients will be eligible for Leqembi treatment, with the prevalence in Asia/Latin America and China potentially reaching 70% of the global total.

The drug is currently priced at $26,500 per year in the U.S. market, with global sales projected to reach $7 billion (1 trillion yen) by 2030.

On January 6, 2023, the FDA granted accelerated approval to Biogen/Eisai's Aβ antibody lecanemab (brand name: Leqembi) for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD); currently, the two companies are seeking full approval from the FDA, with the PDUFA date set for July 6, 2023.

Eisai stated that it is in discussions with the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) regarding the clinical efficacy and safety of the drug, aiming to make it accessible to some early AD patients and expand coverage after full approval.

At this briefing, Eisai also provided explanations regarding the drug's efficacy and safety: After 18 months of lecanemab treatment, the decline in the Clinical Dementia Rating Sum of Boxes (CDR-SB) was reduced by 27%, and the deterioration in activities of daily living slowed by 37%, showing significant improvement over the placebo. Regarding the concerning cerebral hemorrhage-related death incidents, Eisai emphasized that such adverse reactions are relatively rare; after three months of treatment, the risk gradually decreases and returns to baseline levels, with benefits becoming increasingly evident and stabilizing over time.
