Thermo Fisher to Shut Down Princeton, New Jersey Biologics Facility, Cutting 113 Jobs

On April 6, according to Fierce Pharma, Thermo Fisher Scientific plans to close its plant in Princeton, New Jersey, resulting in 113 workers losing their jobs. This layoff will take effect on June 16.

A spokesperson for Thermo Fisher Scientific told Fierce Pharma that the facility provides biologics development and cell therapy services. The spokesperson added that the closure is to "align with current production demand."

Thermo Fisher "continuously evaluates its global operations" to improve efficiency, and the closure of the Princeton facility aligns with "ongoing efforts," the spokesperson further stated.

This move contrasts sharply with Thermo Fisher's high-profile expansion in recent years. In August 2022, Thermo Fisher opened a $105 million single-use technology plant in Lebanon, Tennessee. The 400,000-square-foot facility more than doubled Thermo Fisher's capacity to produce bioprocessing materials. At the opening, the plant employed 300 people, with plans to add another 1,100 employees.

Across the industry, several manufacturing plants have shut down in recent months. Last month, the world's first commercial biopharmaceutical plant — Genentech’s South San Francisco facility — announced its upcoming closure. A senior executive at the plant told Fierce Pharma that instead of large-scale layoffs, most employees would transition to a new clinical supply center in the same city.

In addition, the bankrupt Akron Pharma closed all its plants in the United States in February and laid off all employees.
