Novo Nordisk Inks $2.6B Deal with Aspect Biosystems to Develop Bioprinted Tissue Therapies for Diabetes and Obesity

On April 12, Aspect Biosystems and Novo Nordisk announced that they had reached an agreement to jointly develop bioprinted tissue therapies aimed at replacing, repairing, or supplementing biological functions in the body, providing a new class of treatments for diabetes and obesity.

Under the terms of the agreement, Novo Nordisk will obtain a global exclusive license to use Aspect's bioprinting technology to develop up to four diabetes or obesity products. Aspect will receive a $75 million upfront payment from Novo Nordisk, development, regulatory, commercial, and sales milestone payments of $650 million per product, as well as sales royalties.

Aspect Biosystems is a biotechnology company based in Canada with proprietary bioprinting technology that can develop a new type of cell-based drug, designed to have biological functions, encapsulated with immune protection, and suitable for surgical implantation. Novo Nordisk has developed expertise in differentiating stem cells into various types of cells, which can be used to replace damaged or lost cells that may cause specific diseases, such as insulin-producing β cells in type 1 diabetes, as well as the manufacturing capability to mass-produce these cells.

Novo Nordisk and Aspect will develop implantable bioprinted tissues by combining their strengths to replace, repair, or supplement biological functions. These tissues will be designed to be allogeneic, meaning the cells used come from a single source, which can enhance the feasibility of large-scale manufacturing in the future.
