Bloomberg reported on May 26 that the EU reached an agreement with Pfizer and BioNTech SE to reduce the procurement volume of COVID-19 vaccines by about one-third, as some member states indicated their reluctance to pay for newly delivered vaccines after "the pandemic began to ease."
The European Commission announced on Friday that the revised supply contract takes into account the epidemiological situation while continuing to ensure access to the latest version of the vaccine should a new variant of concern emerge.
The committee said that the new agreement also anticipates a reduction in the number of doses purchased by EU member states under contract. According to two people familiar with the matter who asked not to be named, the quantity will be reduced by about 35%.
