Real-World Evidence from ADA 2023: Oral vs. Injectable Semaglutide in Type 2 Diabetes Management

June 23-26, the 83rd American Diabetes Association (ADA) Annual Meeting was held in San Diego, where Novo Nordisk disclosed the treatment of oral semaglutide and injectable semaglutide.Type 2 Diabetes12-Month Real-World Study Results in Patients.

Oral Semaglutide:

Data from 398 patients with baseline glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels ≥7% were included in the analysis. The results showed that the average HbA1c level decreased from 8.8% to 7.8% (P<0.001), with 32.4% of patients achieving HbA1c levels below 7%. The average weight decreased from 102.4kg to 98.9kg (P<0.001), and the average body mass index (BMI) decreased from 35.2kg/m² to 34.1kg/m² (P<0.001). The proportion of patients with BMI reductions of ≥5% and ≥10% was 33.4% and 11.1%, respectively.

Semaglutide for Injection:

Data from 1,926 patients with a baseline HbA1c level ≥7% were included in the analysis. The results showed that the average HbA1c level decreased from 8.9% to 7.6% (P<0.001), with 40.2% of patients achieving an HbA1c level below 7%. The average weight decreased from 106.3 kg to 102.2 kg (P<0.001), and the average BMI decreased from 36.5 kg/m² to 35.0 kg/m² (P<0.001). Among the patients, 37.9% achieved a BMI reduction of ≥5%, and 13.3% achieved a reduction of ≥10%.

From the data of these two real-world studies, the efficacy of injectable semaglutide and oral semaglutide is undeniable, but the former appears to have better glycemic control and weight loss effects in patients with type 2 diabetes.
