Daiichi Sankyo's mRNA COVID-19 Vaccine DAICHIRONA® (DS-5670) Approved in Japan for Booster Use

The PMDA is responsible for preventing adverse reactions to pharmaceuticals and biologics, as well as conducting timely assessments and responses to such risks, thereby helping to enhance the quality, efficacy, and safety of medicinal products and improve public health. Its scope of work includes providing relief for adverse drug reactions, reviewing pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and related businesses in accordance with the law, ensuring the safety of pharmaceuticals and medical devices, and disseminating information on safety measures and medical products.
On August 2, Daiichi Sankyo announced that the Japanese Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) had approved the company's COVID-19 mRNA vaccine DAICHIRONA® (DS-5670) for market release. The vaccine is intended to prevent COVID-19 infection through booster vaccinations.
DAICHIRONA® is the first mRNA vaccine independently developed and approved by a Japanese company for COVID-19. DAICHIRONA® utilizes a novel nucleic acid delivery technology discovered by Daiichi Sankyo, aiming to generate antibodies against the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, thereby providing effective prevention and safety against COVID-19. This vaccine can be distributed and stored under a 2-8°C cold chain.
Since DAICHIRONA® is a monovalent booster vaccine targeting the original strain, while Japan has been using bivalent mRNA vaccines targeting Omicron for booster shots since May 2023, Daiichi Sankyo has no plans to supply DAICHIRONA®.
However, Daiichi Sankyo stated that it would rapidly advance the development of a monovalent vaccine containing XBB.1 and aim to provide a monovalent vaccine containing XBB.1.5 by the end of this year at the earliest.
