Pharmaceutical R&D and Manufacturer
On November 5, Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD), a world-leading biopharmaceutical company, has made its seventh consecutive appearance at the China International Import Expo (CIIE). At the 8th CIIE, the company presented a comprehensive display of its medical innovations in leading-edge science, R&D collaboration frameworks with Chinese pharmaceutical enterprises, and its persistent dedication to corporate responsibility throughout over three decades of operations in China.
It is reported that, thanks to the powerful spillover effects of the CIIE, several investigational drugs showcased by MSD last year have now obtained marketing approval in China, bringing new treatment options for Chinese patients with drug-resistant bacterial infections and rare diseases. At this year's CIIE, MSD is presenting nearly 30 approved medicines and vaccines in China, covering therapeutic areas including oncology, anti-infectives, diabetes, and rare diseases. The exhibition features multiple innovative drugs and new indications making their debut at the CIIE.
MSD is committed to transforming breakthrough scientific achievements into critical medicines and vaccines. At this year's CIIE, MSD showcased its global and China-specific pipelines across diverse therapeutic areas such as antiviral and cardiovascular treatments. Currently, MSD is advancing clinical research in multiple therapeutic fields in China and expects to introduce over 40 new products and indications to the Chinese market in the next five years.
As a global leader in vaccine innovation, MSD has brought multiple antiviral and antibacterial vaccines to the Chinese market since its zero-profit transfer of hepatitis B vaccine production technology to China in 1989, establishing a robust health defense for the Chinese public.
It is reported that MSD's quadrivalent and nonavalent HPV vaccines have provided protection to more than 50 million women in China to date. This year, these vaccines also received approval for use in males for the prevention of HPV-related cancers and diseases. In pursuit of a future free from HPV-related cancers and diseases, MSD is actively promoting HPV prevention for both males and females, and is committed to working with various partners. In the field of cancer treatment, as of August 2025, MSD's immuno-oncology-focused portfolio has secured marketing approval for 32 indications in China. These address several malignant tumors characterized by high incidence and mortality rates, low overall survival, and considerable treatment challenges in China. From prevention to treatment, MSD remains committed to driving progress and contributing to the realization of the "Healthy China" initiative.
Moreover, over the past three years, MSD has entered into multiple R&D partnerships with five Chinese pharmaceutical companies, including Kelun-Biotech and Hengrui Pharma, focusing on cardiovascular, metabolic, and oncology therapeutic areas. The MSD R&D China Innovation Collaboration Center (MCICC), officially launched on November 1, 2024, is dedicated to fostering deeper synergy with China's life science innovation ecosystem. Its mission is to accelerate the high-quality clinical translation of breakthrough innovations originating from China, enhance their global accessibility and application value, and ultimately contribute to saving and improving lives.
In animal health, MSD also presented its portfolio of products and solutions at this year's CIIE, spanning five key species segments: companion animals, poultry, swine, ruminants, and aquaculture.
