Bayer Appoints Juergen Eckhardt as Head of Business Development & Licensing/Open Innovation for Pharmaceuticals

On August 22, Bayer announced new personnel appointments. Juergen Eckhardt, the former Executive Vice President (EVP) of Bayer and Head of "Leaps by Bayer," will assume the role of Director of Business Development and Licensing/Open Innovation (BDL/OI) at Bayer Pharmaceuticals. Juergen Eckhardt will report directly to Stefan Oelrich, President of Bayer Pharmaceuticals. Additionally, Juergen Eckhardt will continue to serve as the Head of Leaps by Bayer, reporting to Chairman Bill Anderson.

In 2016, Juergen Eckhardt joined Bayer to help launch the "Bayer Leaps" initiative, focusing on investments in breakthrough technologies in the health and agriculture sectors. To date, "Bayer Leaps" has invested in more than 55 companies, with investments exceeding $1.7 billion. Several of these companies have since been acquired by Bayer to enhance its technology portfolio and pipeline.

Before joining Bayer, Juergen Eckhardt was a management consultant and venture capitalist at McKinsey & Co. Prior to McKinsey, he worked as a physician at the University Hospital Basel in Switzerland. Juergen Eckhardt has also served on the boards of numerous biotechnology companies and has led multiple collaboration deals.

Bayer Pharmaceuticals President Stefan Oelrich stated: "Juergen Eckhardt has over 25 years of experience in the healthcare industry, having worked as a physician, strategic consultant, and venture capitalist (including in healthcare, biotechnology, and agriculture). The expertise he has accumulated will be crucial in leading Bayer's external growth strategy. At the same time, I would like to sincerely thank Friedemann Janus for his work as the interim director of BDL/OI over the past few months."
