Jane Grogan has nearly 20 years of leadership experience in biotechnology research. She worked at Genentech for 15 years, during which time, as the lead scientist in cancer immunology research, she conducted in-depth studies on T-cell activation, tolerance induction, and epigenetic regulatory mechanisms through an integrated approach combining bioinformatics, biology, and diagnostics. She identified key regulators of effector T cells and regulatory T cells and advanced several targets into clinical research for autoimmune and cancer indications, such as TNF-α for rheumatoid arthritis and TIGIT for cancer immunotherapy. During her time at Genentech, she was also responsible for strategic integration between early discovery, clinical development, and business development, and served as the project leader for engineered T-cell therapy.
Jane Grogan also served as the Chief Scientific Officer of cell and gene editing company Graphite Bio. Not only that, she also served as the Chief Scientific Officer of T-cell therapy company ArsenalBio, overseeing research, discovery, and preclinical pipelines, including the development of the company's first candidate product.
Viehbacher stated, "Dr. Grogan is a pioneering scientist whose groundbreaking discoveries at Genentech have paved the way for the development of targeted therapies in autoimmune and oncology fields. I believe she will be a valuable asset to Biogen as we seek to bring more innovative drugs to market faster and more efficiently. She will work with Dr. Priya Singhal, Executive Vice President and Head of Development, to define the company’s portfolio strategy and make decisions on our scientific expertise and translational capabilities."
In recent years, Biogen's overall revenue has been affected by the fluctuating decline in sales of its multiple sclerosis (MS) business and repeated setbacks in the development of innovative drugs like Aduhelm, leading to continuous negative news about layoffs and pipeline cuts. It is hoped that the addition of Jane Grogan will bring new opportunities to Biogen.
