On September 11, Madrigal Pharmaceuticals announced that Bill Sibold has succeeded Paul Friedman as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and joined the board of directors.

Sibold holds a bachelor's degree in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School. Before joining Madrigal Pharmaceuticals, Sibold served as the Global Vice President of Sanofi and the Global Head of Specialty Care, leading a global organization of approximately 10,000 employees in North America, with business spanning five major areas: immunology, oncology, rare diseases, rare blood disorders, and neurology.

During his tenure, Sanofi's specialty drug business achieved continuous double-digit growth, becoming the company's largest global business unit. Dupixent (dupilumab), launched under Sibold’s leadership, has grown to become Sanofi's top-selling drug.

In 2011, Sibold joined Sanofi Genzyme as the Global Franchise Head of Multiple Sclerosis, and was promoted in 2015 to Senior Vice President of Multiple Sclerosis, Oncology, and Immunology, as well as Global Franchise Head. Prior to joining Sanofi, Sibold served as Chief Commercial Officer at Avanir Pharmaceuticals, President and CEO at Lycera Corp, and Senior Vice President of Biogen's U.S. Commercial Division.

Madrigal's core product is resmetirom, a drug for treating non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) with liver fibrosis. The pivotal Phase III clinical trial of this product has met the histological primary endpoints, meaning that resmetirom can lead to the regression of NASH symptoms in patients (NAS score reduction of more than 2 points) without worsening fibrosis, and it can also stabilize NASH symptoms while improving fibrosis by ≥1 stage. Currently, resmetirom has been submitted for marketing approval in the U.S. and is expected to become the first drug for treating NASH (see: ).

"Bill Sibold is the ideal leader to take Madrigal into its next phase of development," said Julian Baker, Chairman of the Board. "His expertise and extensive experience will be invaluable in helping Madrigal transition from clinical development to commercial integration."
