On September 14, 2023, Mayo Clinic and GE HealthCare announced a strategic healthcare collaboration on research and product development projects: applying artificial intelligence to magnetic resonance imaging, diagnostic and interventional ultrasound automation, and other activities that can improve patient care, aiming to transform the experience of patients and clinicians in radiology practice and provide new treatment methods.
It is worth mentioning that the two parties have a history of collaboration: In 2016, GE Ventures, the venture capital subsidiary of General Electric, and Mayo Clinic jointly established an independent platform company called Vitruvian Networks. The latter developed a medical electronic record system, providing a leading software and manufacturing platform that brought the Internet of Things to cell and gene therapies.

Innovative Strategic Collaboration in Medical Imaging and Therapeutics Composed of Scientists, Technology Developers, Clinicians, and Other Healthcare Providers from Mayo Clinic and GE Healthcare. This partnership aims to better equip clinicians with technologies for precise diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions through the clinical translation of new technologies and methods in medical imaging and therapeutics, personalizing the patient experience at every step of the care process.
"We are at a pivotal moment in healthcare — technology is evolving rapidly, and it is our responsibility to advance healthcare capabilities through clinical translation and the adoption of cutting-edge technologies," said Matthew Callstrom, M.D., Ph.D., chair of Radiology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. "This collaboration brings the expertise and feedback of our research and clinical teams closer to product development and the commercialization of innovations, ultimately accelerating the translation of our research findings into patient care and providing greater opportunities for global impact."

Based on the long history of research collaboration between the two institutions, they will deepen their cooperation by focusing on the following four core areas:
Accelerate the development and clinical translation of advanced magnetic resonance (MR) technology,Transforming Patient Care Through AI-Enabled Examination from Order to Report.
Transforming cancer treatment through precise imaging and dosimetry of highly targeted therapeutic drugs. And achieve broader reach through more efficient production of radioisotopes.
Make diagnostic and interventional ultrasound easier and faster to use and read,Advance automation and quantification simultaneously to improve patient access, care consistency, and the clinician experience.
By leveraging multimodal data, artificial intelligence, and digital health platforms,Jointly simplify clinical operations and support more personalized diagnosis and treatment, improving the patient imaging experience throughout the care process.
"Mayo Clinic is a globally recognized leader in healthcare and nursing innovation. 'By collaborating with their scientists, inventors, and healthcare providers, we will accelerate innovation and enhance the clinical impact of our technologies, which neither of our organizations could achieve independently,' said Jan Makela, President and CEO of GE Healthcare's imaging business."

This multifocal collaboration brings together clinical research, product development, new clinical applications, and technology implementation, as well as increasing patient accessibility. This collaboration is a close partnership between the research team and medical departments reliant on radiological data, spanning multiple radiological disciplines, cardiology, oncology, radiation oncology, vascular medicine, neurology, nuclear medicine, and urology. Collaborative activities and research will be conducted at the Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester, Minnesota.
Notably, since separating from its parent company, GE Healthcare has established a series of partnerships, collaborating with companies such as Boston Scientific, Johnson & Johnson, and Medtronic.
