On September 26, Caribou Biosciences disclosed in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that AbbVie has opted to terminate the collaboration and license agreement for two novel CAR-T cell therapies that the companies entered into on February 9, 2021. The termination of the agreement will take effect on October 25, 2023.

Caribou stated that the decision to terminate the agreement was based on AbbVie's adjustment of strategic priorities, and was unrelated to Caribou's performance or the data generated to date under the agreement.

In February 2021, AbbVie and Caribou Biosciences jointly announced that they had signed a collaboration and licensing agreement for the development of CAR-T cell therapies. Under the terms of this multi-year agreement, AbbVie will utilize Caribou’s next-generation Cas12a CRISPR hybrid RNA-DNA gene editing and cell therapy technology to develop two novel CAR-T cell therapies targeting subjects designated by AbbVie.

Caribou Biosciences, Inc., founded in 2011, is a leading biotechnology company in the clinical-stage CRISPR genome editing field. It focuses on applying proprietary technologies to develop genome-edited off-the-shelf CAR-T and CAR-NK therapies for cancer treatment. The company's co-founders include Nobel laureate Jennifer Doudna.
